Midnight Lies- This Wilde Sister is Fierce…
The identical triplet Wilde sisters of Midnight, Alabama are back in a second tale of love and suspense. Although some details may be lost if you haven’t read the first, I still believe you could enjoy this novel as a standalone…but don’t. The first is just as wonderful.
This installment focuses on police detective Samantha and her lover, divorced Dr. Quinn Braddock, a commitment-phobe. Their relationship turns even more complicated when Quinn is suspected of murdering his ex-wife. Though Samantha quickly clears his name, the damage inflicted by mistrust and miscommunication is done and Sam returns home to Midnight unemployed with a broken heart. Months later, Quinn learns how Sam exonerated him and tracks her to her childhood home determined to win her back, even though he still is not interested in marriage. Quinn plots seduction and romance to win back Samantha but he didn’t count on having to deal with a close knit town watching or blamed for a second murder being thrust upon him.
Sam and Quinn’s relationship is believable on many levels including conflict and motivation. Samantha has done what many women do, fallen for a guy who proclaims that he never wants to get married (again) or have kids. Challenge accepted; Sam knows she’s the one that can change his mind! But she doesn’t know that Quinn has plenty of reason for his decision including a harassing ex-wife, alcoholic, uncaring parents, and a dead, psychotic brother. Quinn has never lived in a loving family like Sam’s, so he doesn’t think it’s possible. With that said, we readers see what Sam does; that beneath his controlled exterior, Quinn is a loving, honorable man more committed than he wants to believe. Even through their many breakups and missteps, neither denies that they care deeply for the other; they just believe that the hurdles and risk of heartache are too high.
The other characters that come alive in Midnight, Alabama are just as convincing and even minor characters are clearly developed. The dysfunctional Daytons, busybody Inez, unemotional Faye, and cooking-challenged Aunt Gibby all create the charm and drawbacks of small-town living. Additionally, Savannah and Zach from the first book are not ignored or forgotten as some authors tend to do with their previous featured couples. Instead they become integral characters as well as Sam’s third sister, Sabrina and Zach’s buddies, Logan and Brady.
This is a fast paced novel that keeps you turning pages; I read it in less than a day. The plot is intriguing and while I had guessed some parts, the twists and surprise ending were still satisfying. The dialogue is realistic and flows well; for someone that doesn’t believe in HEA’s, Quinn says and does some of the most romantic things I’ve read. This is a strong entry in a fine series; one I intend on reading until its conclusion. I’m looking forward to the next Wilde adventure in Midnight!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review.

IT’S ALWAYS HOTTER AT MIDNIGHT.
The winds of fate have blown cruelly on a family that once had it all: money, power, prestige. The lives of three beautiful daughters were forever changed when, on a sultry night in Midnight, Alabama, a murder-suicide shattered the Wilde family. The girls grew up to live separate lives but now have returned home, each to face a danger no one can see coming.
Former homecoming queen Samantha surprised everyone by going into law enforcement, but beneath her tough façade lies a wary heart. The tragedy that struck her family is an ever-present reminder that nothing is ever as it seems. When the man she loves, Quinn Braddock, a doctor and Iraq war veteran, is accused of murder, Samantha assumes the worst. Brokenhearted, her confidence shattered, she returns to Midnight. Though exonerated, Quinn still feels the sting of Samantha’s doubt, but he can’t forget his feelings for her and follows her. Soon after his arrival, a shocking murder terrifies the town, and once again, Quinn is under suspicion. This time, Samantha will not turn her back on the man she loves—even if it means walking into a killer’s trap.
