This Fire-Breathing Dragon is HOT!
This novella caught my attention in three ways. First, the cover is hot and, based on this, it combines two of my favorite genres; paranormal and (former)military romance. I figured with these three aspects, I would enjoy the story and I was right. Up front, there was one drawback; dragons. I've always avoided dragon-shifter stories since I read another novella years ago and it was horrible. This one, however, has dispelled that prejudice and replaced it with a compelling interest.
As an introductory novella to a new world, Ms. Lopez gives us the beginning mythology of her dragon-shifter world including our heroes, antagonists and the origins of their conflict. I enjoyed how she incorporated the reference to St. George the dragonslayer. We learn about the Brotherhood of the Green Hide, a band of dragons sworn to protect their society from the Knights. We also discover there is more than one kind of dragon and each has different abilities though they also share similar traits. All this information is interestingly woven into the novella through the revelation of Stig’s secret life to his potential mate, a human woman, Cora.
Stig and Cora are a wonderfully written couple. Stig is hot, angstsy, and fights his attraction to Cora for a number of reasons. Cora has wanted Stig for years but it isn’t until her brother, Stig’s best friend, and her grandmother die that Cora is forced to act. At this time, Cora finds herself maneuvered into a dangerous position and she runs to Stig for protection. Of course, just as Cora shows up on Stig’s doorstep, he is about to go into his heat cycle, which occurs every three years. Stig needs to hide his secret, deny his attraction to Cora, and protect her from the criminals chasing her…what’s a dragon to do?
Overall, I really enjoyed this story especially since I was going in with some trepidation. Stig and Cora matched up well. The story, as well as the sex scenes, was well-written. The potential of this dragon-shifter world has caught my interest and I will definitely read the next one to see how it develops.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
The last thing dragon shifter Stig Wyvern needs is his dead friend's kid sister showing up on his doorstep, especially since he's just minutes away from entering a mating phase. Sharing his isolated house with the young woman he's desperately lusted after for quite some time is a recipe for disaster.
But Cora Cardenas has nowhere else to go. She's in deep trouble with some really nasty people and Stig is the only one who can protect her. That he's deliciously sexy and makes her tingle with the simplest of smiles is an added bonus.
Cora quickly realizes Stig is hiding something from her. To make matters worse, she's plagued with breathtakingly naughty dreams starring a shadowed lover who bears a startling resemblance to her host. And what the hell is going on in the basement at night?
Stig needs to get Cora out of his house but his inner beast has other ideas. He's found his mate and she's not going anywhere.
