Darker After Midnight

The Midnight Breed, #10

Darker After Midnight was reported to be the climatic ending of the Midnight series. But I’m very pleased to note it is just a turning point on Lara Adrian's plot/story arc. At any rate it was definitely the long anticipated story of Sterling Chase. Sterling is a breed warrior that’s been crashing down hill fast. With each new novel readers have watched Sterling go from an honorable enforcer to an out of control breed. He’s been bordering on going rogue with his growing addiction to blood. Tavia is the aide to a senator that Sterling attacked. While she has noticed changes in her boss, Tavia has no clue that he is now a minion and working with Dragos, a vampire out to rule the human world.

I enjoyed this story mainly because I wanted to know the hero could be saved. Sterling was pretty much kicked out of the order and seems close to rampaging and bleeding dry an innocent human. The story was a good read but didn’t match some of the other potent novels of this series for me. That often happens as series continue and change. I liked Tavia and Chase together. I did feel like the story, despite lots of action, tended to drag in parts. That’s something I’ve noticed in a few of the latest novels. Midway through the story it did begin to steadily pick up. Dragos who has tormented the breed warriors in several novels was portrayed as the ultimate villain but the way he’s taken care of was a bit anticlimactic. Things were wrapped up neatly, but it just needed a bit more with all the build-up. With this being a bridge novel into a new story arc I also did feel that it spent more time on breeds relocation and less time focusing on the key hero and heroine. I would have like to have seen more into Travia and Sterling’s love. Overall, this was a good continuation to a longstanding and enjoyable paranormal romance series. I look forward to seeing where it goes next.

Book Blurb for Darker After Midnight

The climactic novel in Lara Adrian’s New York Times bestselling Midnight Breed series--and her hardcover debut--Darker After Midnight invites readers to enter a thrillingly sensual world where danger meets desire.

In the dark of night, a blood war escalates within the hidden world of the Breed. After existing in secret for many long centuries, maintaining a fragile peace with the humans who walk beside them unaware, a single act of retaliation has put the entire vampire nation at risk of discovery. It falls to the Order--a cadre of Breed warriors pledged to protect their own and humankind alike--to stop Dragos, the power-mad vampire at the center of the conflict, before his push for domination can explode into catastrophe.

At the center of the Order’s quest is Sterling Chase, once a morally rigid enforcer of Breed law, now a warrior fallen from grace, whose biggest battle is the one he wages against his own savage nature. With addiction beckoning him toward eternal darkness, Chase’s path to redemption has never seemed more out of reach--until he finds himself drawn to a beautiful young woman who may be something much more than she seems . . .

This is not the end to the series, but a turning point. This is Lara Adrian's first Hardback.
