Jem has a unique gift; she is able to see the date on which people will die. So she has always avoided getting close to people. That is until she meets Spider. Jem begins to have feelings for him, but she wants to take it slow because of his expiration date. One morning Spider and she are in London when she discovers that everyone she sees has the same expiration date, that very day! She freaks out and runs away with Spider. Right after, there is a massive explosion. Spider and Jem are mentioned to the police by witnesses who saw them fleeing the scene immediately before the explosion, so now they are on the run from the police. Will Spider and Jem be able to escape? And if so, can they survive on their own?
"Numbers" was a great action-packed book. I couldn't stop reading until I had finished the last page. Watching Jem and Spider's relationship grow and mature was one of the special treats of this book. The plot twist at the end was unexpected and totally amazing. Rachel Ward is a great author and I can't wait till her next book. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading about people with special gifts or anyone who likes a fast-paced action novel.
Ever since she was child, Jem has kept a secret: Whenever she meets someone new, no matter who, as soon as she looks into their eyes, a number pops into her head. That number is a date: the date they will die. Burdened with such awful awareness, Jem avoids relationships. Until she meets Spider, another outsider, and takes a chance. The two plan a trip to the city. But while waiting to ride the Eye ferris wheel, Jem is terrified to see that all the other tourists in line flash the same number. Today's number. Today's date. Terrorists are going to attack London. Jem's world is about to explode!
