Abandoned by his family, then sold and mistreated as a child, John Powell is now a man in hiding and he fights his secret torment daily. Determined to keep to himself and avoid scrutiny, John has grown an unruly beard masking his identity and shuns human contact unless absolutely necessary. Some even question his sanity, but John knows it’s only a matter of time before the Chosen find him and whisk him back into society. Surviving quietly, his peace is invaded by the beautiful and perky Genesis. Watching her silently as she travels throughout the forest, he has to use his powers quickly to save her from death as she falls from a tree while taking pictures of the Ural Lynx.
Forced by her father to give up her dreams of becoming a veterinarian, Genesis has excelled in business school and graduating with honors, but she’s not happy. A graduation gift from her father to explore the Ural Mountains in Rasputye and the endangered wildlife has Genesis thrilled and also wary, and she’s right. Her joy is dashed when she realizes the gift comes with strings. In order to pay back the school loan her father secured for her, all she needs to do is find John Powell and convince him to come back to New York to fulfill his duties as part of the Chosen. Just like that, her father’s debt will be erased and Genesis is angry at being manipulated by her father yet again. But the need to be in the open air to find out more about the elusive cat is strong, and she agrees to at least speak with Mr. Powell.
Upon her arrival with the tour group, Genesis hears all kinds of myths and stories about John Powell, but when they meet and she encounters his startling blue eyes and amazing kindness, she realizes he’s nothing like what people say. After spending more time together, she senses John’s incredible power and loneliness and is undeniably attracted. Even worse, she wants to tell him why she’s there, knowing that he’ll feel betrayed, yet the opportunity never presents itself.
The blurbs depict John Powell as a savage, and to me that’s not an accurate description. He is more of a tortured hero, automatically hooking, and then reeling me into the plot of this magnificent storyline. John has yet to come to terms with what he believes is his fault in the loss of his family, but for the first time in two years, someone has been able to bring a smile to his face and he’s smitten. He’s so besotted, in fact, that he surprises everyone by shaving off all that massive hair and cleans up in an effort to impress Genesis. He may have impressed the woman of his dreams, but someone else in the exploration group looks at John with rage and insane jealousy.
Genesis is perky and bright, and has an incredible sense of humor, but in my opinion has difficulty standing up to her loser father, and that’s a good portion of what drives her actions. It’s clear that she’s been without love most of her life, as indicated by a mother who ignored her and a father who uses her. In addition, she's been in school for six years getting a degree she never really wanted and getting a job she knows she'll despise.. But John seems to be perfect because he can feel her hurt and wants to make it all better. Incredibly sensitive and intuitive, his strength is also just as phenomenal. Genesis is a virgin, and just in case you may not know how much of an incredible romance writer Dodd is, here’s a reminder, “You don’t have to know what to do. In fact, you don’t have to do anything except lie there while I show you” - he brushed his lips over her eyelids, closing them -“what love is.”
My heart is still aflutter and I want to marry John Powell right this minute. I’ve been with Ms, Dodd since her first historical way back when, and her writing has definitely evolved and gotten even better if that’s possible. Find everything you need as you get carried away in the fantasy, the emotional depth and the passionate prose of this paranormal hit, CHAINS OF ICE.
