Sunny Los Angeles is the city on the hot seat this time as demon hunter Moira O’Donnell along with ex-priest Rafe Cooper take on the demon, Lust. Something is dreadfully wrong as Kent Gallion, the owner of the popular club, Velocity forces himself on one of the working waitresses. Never mind that Kent is one of the most sought after bachelors in the state and very rich, so attacking a woman is so out of character. Unable to believe what he’s seeing, Detective Grant Nelson comes to the rescue to save the very fortunate employee by jumping on Kent. Noticing the feverish and convulsive body of the club owner with eyes that are now fiery red, the Detective is shocked when Kent dies. What's going on?
Some of the gang is back after capturing Envy in ORIGINAL SIN, the first book in the series, and include Sheriff Skye McPherson and her demonologist lover Anthony, who just happens to hate Moria, and some other wicked characters to keep your attention. Despite being part of a well-written series, each book can definitely stand on its own.
Interesting and more prevalent in this book is the romance between Rafe and Moira. Almost nonexistent in the first book, there is definitely heat between the two that fits in nicely with the storyline. Indeed, as lust is the demon of the day, one can expect plenty of steaminess that’s interesting, yet not over the top, and keeps the plot moving. For those looking for non-stop action and some mystery, you’ll get all of that here and then some. Watch how demons sneakily infest a person’s body who’s already susceptible-some quite unexpectedly. Add to that a nice mix of evil witches and you have a match made in heaven. An absolutely brilliant writer, I had a hard time understanding Allison Brennan's need to consistently introduce and re-introduce Nina Hardwick, one of the secondary characters, as working for the Board of Supervisors, every time she came on the scene. One introduction seemed okay and maybe even two, but after that is a little like "too much".
Despite that snafu, CARNAL SIN is a page-turning adventure filled with just enough intensity to keep you up at night wondering... what if?
