Blood Claim: Tainted

Jessye has dabbled in a little too much dark magic, and now she needs her consort Syrus to help her regain some of her control. Syrus has his own problems: Lorrie, the woman who destroyed his wife, is now trying to kill him as well and the feeling’s mutual.

In this third of the Blood Claim series, Selena Illyria explores love, expectations, and belonging as Jessye and Syrus first fight their blood claim, then go on a psychological journey to eventually learn that together they are more powerful than apart. Throughout much of the book, the couple fight their feelings, but their love is resolved in time for them to take on the final battle to gain revenge and save the clan. Interesting world-building and a well-developed system of magic make the story interesting, though the couple's ongoing reluctance to acknowledge their feelings slows it down.

Great characters from earlier in the series Kit and Rysen show up in Tainted. While reading the previous outings enrich this read, Tainted stands well on it’s own.

Syrus was seeking revenge. Jessye was just trying to adjust to having a new leader. Their desire burns hot, but the past and stubbornness stands between them.
Syrus will claim Jessye as his consort and gain the revenge for the murder of those he loved. Jessye will submit to him. Like hell, Jessye says. She is no one’s consort. She stands on her own and doesn’t need him. But her hunger for him haunts them both between the hunt for a murderer and political games.
Dark magick and blood, anger and desire will bring them together but also push them apart. Love, lust, need, revenge can all be tainted. Forgiveness and acceptance can heal it all.
