Tessa Dare tempts, teases and tantalizes with this historical romance. Charlotte Highwood is a joy to follow as she stumbles into trouble from the very beginning and then seems to just keep floundering in to more with undeniable skill. Upon her first meeting with the impressive Marquess I loved how she just kept inserting her foot into her mouth and I couldn’t wait to see what else she would say whenever she encountered him.
Piers Brandon, Lord Granville appears to be a man with more control than most. However it was highly entertaining seeing him lose that control when it came to the young woman intent on saving him from her mother and herself. I liked that we got to see glimpses into his character through his interactions with his valet and his internal thoughts. What I enjoyed even more was the fact that he was in no way perfect. In fact he had some rather ruthless characteristics. But faults and flaws he is perfect for the young heroine and it was such a joy to watch them figure things out.
I am holding my breath that Charlotte’s best friend can have her very own adventure because something tells me she could lead some unsuspecting gentleman on quite the chase. If you are unfamiliar with this author, I suggest you pick up one of her books, especially this one because you will not be disappointed.
While at a house party Charlotte Highwood tries to warn Piers Brandon, Lord Granville of the machinations her mother has planned to promote their marriage. Instead of saving them both from an unwanted engagement she finds herself in a compromising situation. Determined to prove they have done nothing untoward Charlotte sets out to find a way to end their impending marriage, but is that truly what they both want?
On the night of the Parkhurst ball, someone had a scandalous tryst in the library.
Was it Lord Canby, with the maid, on the divan? Or Miss Fairchild, with a rake, against the wall? Perhaps the butler did it.
All Charlotte Highwood knows is this: it wasn’t her. But rumors to the contrary are buzzing. Unless she can discover the lovers’ true identity, she’ll be forced to marry Piers Brandon, Lord Granville—the coldest, most arrogantly handsome gentleman she’s ever had the misfortune to embrace.
When it comes to emotion, the man hasn’t got a clue.
But as they set about finding the mystery lovers, Piers reveals a few secrets of his own. The oh-so-proper marquess can pick locks, land punches, tease with sly wit . . . and melt a woman’s knees with a single kiss. The only thing he guards more fiercely than Charlotte’s safety is the truth about his dark past.
Their passion is intense. The danger is real. Soon Charlotte’s feeling torn. Will she risk all to prove her innocence? Or surrender it to a man who’s sworn to never love?
