MaryJanice Davidson is a major talent in the paranormal fiction world and her amazing skill is showcased with this fantastic story. So I was a little lery in choosing "Deja New". Only because I hadn't read the first in the series. And while I believe I might have benefitted from reading the first I don't believe it impacted my enjoyment of this story. Although I do believe I will go back and read "Deja Who".
Leah Nasir is a strong, capable, kick butt heroine and she's handling more than this lifetime's load of issues, and not just her own. Archer Drake is the perfect complement to her and I can't wait to read about how they got together. While these two do play a considerable role in the story, for me the leading couple were Archer's cousin Angela and Detective Sexy Socks. I loved how unbelievably complex and downright normal these two were. They had issues and foibles and both had idiosyncratic traits that would make your head spin. But they were both just so darn authentic. I would have read the story just for their interactions.
I had a hard time jumping right in and understanding just who was who with the numerous cousins and brothers and I also wasn't a fan of the flashbacks, but overall I completely enjoyed myself. This author's tone always takes me away from the everyday stresses. I loved the footnotes. I never read them while I'm reading the story as I don't want to be removed from the adventure. But reading them at the end made me laugh out loud. If you are looking for something different, I'd give "Deja New" a shot. But it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
The Story: Leah Nasir is a talented insighter who can deduce people's past lives from a touch. She has come to visit her fiancé Archer Drake's family. Soon she is embroiled in family secrets, hers, and his and everything might not be as it appears.
The New York Times bestselling author of the Undead Novels takes on reincarnation in this unforgettable Insighter Novel about the pitfalls in past—and love—lives…

Isn’t he the best?
Now, it’s time to take their relationship to the next level, but not in any way Leah could have predicted. She and Archer head to Chicago to meet his parents—and try to figure out why Archer’s dad killed his brother decades ago.
