Stacy Gail gives readers an inventive adventure with the first story, Crime Wave in a Corset
Cornelia was a spitfire of a character. Even though she has some sketchy morals her past explains a lot and keeps her sympathetic to the reader. I loved that she was intelligent, strong and independent. Coddington is a complex character appearing ruthless and cold yet I couldn’t help believe he had valid reasons for his feelings and reactions. I enjoyed watching their attraction turn into a relationship however I would have enjoyed a little more emotion from them both. The details and scenery are fabulous and I will definitely check out this author’s other offerings.
In the second story PG Forte presents a deeply emotional, timeless tale of love, acceptance and forgiveness with This Winter Heart. Ophelia is an outstanding heroine. She her story was so distressing and so very emotional that I couldn’t help but be pulled right in. While Dario came off a little unsympathetic I believe he had valid reasons for all of his concerns. A proud man he must be devastated thinking he was being made a fool. Their young son is such a ray of sunshine bringing thoughts of hope, happiness and healing. This was a painful yet beautiful story that I know I will find myself reading over and over again. I was greatly intrigued by the steampunk elements and am looking forward to exploring the various facets of this genre.
Jenny Schwartz offers a fantastic historical with a twist in Wanted: One Scoundrel. This was indeed my favourite of the anthology due mainly to the overall appeal the story held for me. I loved the setting, the characters and the situation. Esme is someone I could easily see being friends with. I love her passion and her audacity. Jed is one fabulous scoundrel in a completely charming way. He is practically perfect and at times I found myself rather jealous of the heroine. It was interesting to have a holiday story with sweltering hot weather and I enjoyed the twist. I also enjoyed all the fantastic little details that brought this story to life including the fantastic supporting characters of whom I became greatly attached to. I’m looking forward to seeing one or all of these people make reappearances in a brand new adventure.
With the final story JK Coi portrays an emotion tale of bravery and brilliance with Far From Broken. Callie is resilient and yet vulnerable and like everyone insecure when her entire world changes. She could have simply checked out but instead she is tough and deals with all her life now entails. Jasper is a sympathetic, surprisingly emotional alpha-male. The steampunk elements are fantastic in a very dark, very intense way. I love how emotional the story was and yet still remained tender. I’m definitely going to check out this author’s backlist.
All four stories are engaging, unique reads and I’m sure if you are new to the genre these will be a great introduction and if you are a long-time fan you will definitely appreciate them. These stories are all good lengths so enjoy this anthology of solid steam punk tales.
