Lakeshore Chronicles Series, #3

"Dockside" by Susan Wiggs is the third in the popular Lakeside Chronicles series. Each book stands alone, but it helps to have read the previous two, "Summer at Willow Lake" and "The Winter Lodge," to understand all the family entanglements. As with the earlier stories, "Dockside" takes place in idyllic Avalon, in upstate New York, on the banks of lovely Willow Lake.

Nina Romano is a feisty leading lady. A former teen mom, she's put her life on hold until her daughter goes off to college. She's got impressive plans for the next chapter of her life: managing and someday owning the Inn at Willow Lake, a run down hotel. Her plans hit a snag when newly divorced father of two Greg Bellamy (uncle of Olivia Bellamy, heroine of "Summer at Willow Lake") buys the inn before she has a chance. The paths of Greg and Nina have intersected more than either one cares to admit, and working as a team to make the inn successful brings them together once more.

As with the other books in the Lakeside Chronicles, this one features perfectly imperfect people, dealing with family troubles in a town where everyone knows everyone else's business. The character of Greg is wonderful, well designed and realistic. His heartbreak over his divorce is palpable. Nina is a little less clear, sometimes wild and bold, other times timid and shy. But their long path to find each other is an enjoyable read for anyone who enjoys family sagas.
