Jill Shalvis has created another story that has taken my heart by surprise. Aubrey and Ben were an unexpected couple with a great history. And a well told history is just as important to a romance as the relationship is. I absolutely loved that neither Ben nor Aubrey were ready for the relationship that was developing between them. It made their romance that much sweeter. Ben was this uber Alpha male that had lost his wife 5 years back and had returned to Lucky Harbor to find peace once again. And boy did he find something or someone worth keeping!
The Lucky Harbor series is truly a one of a kind set of romances that develops into heartwarming stories within every single book. And "Once In A Lifetime" was no different! These characters always manage to take me by surprise and show me a true love story that is very realistic. I also really enjoyed the reappearances of characters from previous books. Though if you come into the series with "Once In A Lifetime" you won't have a single problem following the story even though it is book 9, because each book can basically be read as a stand alone.
My only problem with this book was that the conflict between Ben and Aubrey seemed to carry on for much longer than was enjoyable. For me it felt like there was a lot of moaning about guilt and heartbreak when I would have liked it a lot more if Ben had come to a realization in a more timely manner. But other than that I found the book to be overall very enjoyable and left me with a very satisfied feeling. Which is exactly what I'm looking for in a romance novel.
Ben McDaniel knows all about grief and after loosing his wife Hannah, and he tried to escape those feeling by working to help better the lives of people in war-torn countries. But after five years of helping others he has come home to Lucky Harbor to find peace. But what he finds instead is an incredibly irresistible blonde that might just ignite a hope for the future within his heart.
Not only is Aubrey working her butt of trying to get her bookstore off the ground, but she is also trying to find a way to right all of her wrongs from past mistakes. And as it happens the one man she never expected to see again is back in town and Aubrey now has the chance to right the one mistake that weighs heaviest on her conscience. But will lust and old feelings threaten her best laid plans? Only the truth revealed will bring about what is meant to be.
SOMETIMES WRONG IS OH-SO-RIGHT
After a wrenching loss, Ben McDaniel tried to escape his grief by working in dangerous, war-torn places like Africa and the Middle East. Now he's back in his hometown and face-to-face with Aubrey Wellington, the hot-as-hell woman who is trouble with a capital T. Family and friends insist she's not the one to ease his pain, but Aubrey sparks an intense desire that gives Ben hope for the future.
Determined to right the wrongs of her past, Aubrey is working hard to make amends. But by far, the toughest challenge to her plan is sexy, brooding Ben - even though he has absolutely no idea what she's done . . .
Can this unlikely couple defy the odds and win over the little town of Lucky Harbor?
