How (Not) to Kiss a Toad

Cindy Eller #1

I finally got this series to download and thought it would be a nice series to fill in the time as I sat waiting in the doctor’s office. It sounded cute, but more like a book geared to juveniles only. Boy was I wrong. Yes it will appeal to the youth, but it also has appeal for the adult audience as well. All of us can sympathize with kissing a few toads until we were lucky enough to find our personal Prince Charming. Cindy unfortunately has a frog or two yet to kiss.

Returning from her latest date Cindy Eller fell onto the sofa exhausted. Her roommate takes one look at her and asks, "Prince Charming or Toad?” Cindy replies "Toad, of course." and Jessi tosses her some SweetDreams Ice Cream. According to Cindy nothing helped a situation like Ice Cream. Cindy does not have a very good track record with boyfriends and never has. Unfortunately Cindy has a small problem. You see Cindy is a witch, from a long line of witches and every time she kisses a boyfriend he turns into a toad. Sometimes for a day, sometimes longer, but no matter how long it is guaranteed the boyfriend will not be coming round for another date.

When her purse begins to scoot off the cushion Cindy grabs it produces Nathan, that nights date. He is a toxic, ugly and mucus covered toad. She places him in the toad house, an aquarium and Doll house combination the she and her roommates had constructed to keep her dates in until they returned to their human form. Cindy heads to bed and dreams of cannoli with lavender cream. The next day she makes them for the bakery where she works using her magic and they are a huge success. One customer in particular wants to congratulate her on her creation and asks if she will come out to meet him. When Cindy comes out she looks up to see Timothy Borden, one of the most handsome men she has ever met, and promptly trips and lands on her fanny and bangs her head.

After a few days Nathan has not yet returned to normal and it appears he is getting bigger every day. Then Amy shows up asking Cindy what happened to her boyfriend Nathan. He was last seen on a date with Cindy and Amy wants to know where Nathan is. Just then Nathan attempts the Great Escape and Cindy denies any knowledge about Nathan. She grabs him and returns to the kitchen. Her mother calls to tell her she has set up an interview for a job in the magical community, but Cindy tells her no, that she loves her job. Then the Davies, the bakery owners tell them all they are selling out and retiring. Still Nathan continues to grow. Her only bright spot, Tim returns and asks her for a date.

She calls her stepfather Stephen, her mother's twelfth husband and asks him for help. After many attempts to reverse the spell on Nathan he tells Cindy that she needs tutoring. They make arrangements for her to come back in a few days as he needs do some research about Nathan first. As she gets ready to leave he tells her he understands about her not wanting to work for the magical council, but they need to fix her toad problems because if she cannot control her magic the council may bind them forever.

Cindy's life spirals out of control. She finds her new recipes are knock offs of the SweetDreams Ice Cream flavors. Nathan is growing fast. His girlfriend is stalking her and she can't find a new job. Plus the bakery is closing soon and she is terrified to kiss Tim with whom she is falling in love with. What will she do without her magic? It may be faulty but it is a part of her. Time is running out....

Cindy is adventurous in her culinary life as well as her personal so she appealed to me on two fronts. I like to experiment in the kitchen but unlike Cindy I only dream of being adventurous in other parts of my like. I like to believe there is more to this world than what we can see, but not so sure I would want to know it for a fact. You will laugh all throughout the book but there is so much more to experience as well. Ms. Reeves introduces us to a world that co-exist with the "ordinary world" those of the magical gene hide it from us. I might believe my neighbor to be an ogre, I just don't want to know I was right. Pick up any of Ms. Reeves books. All can be read as a standalone, but you will want to read them as a group once you start.
