While We Were Watching Downton Abbey

The title of this book is a good reason to open it and start reading. "While We Were Watching Downton Abbey", really pulled me in and it became a one-day read.

There is a newly renovated apartment building in historic Atlanta, GA called the Alexander. The building opened in the year 1913 and was one of the most sought after luxurious apartment houses in the state. As time went by the building suffered some set-backs but was purchased by a developer who renovated it into condos and that is when this story begins.

The featured players in this book start with Samantha Davis, a sweet southern girl who married for convenience as she and her siblings were parentless and Samantha married a very nice man but for the security of money for herself and her family instead of love. She is about to find out that there is a family betrayal coming her way. The next person in line, Claire Walker, is an author who is struggling to become known and has moved to the Alexander to live a new and productive life. She is about to learn that things are not always as they seem. Last but definitely not least there is Brooke Mackenzie, a girl who is constantly in a fight with her ex-husband who is not a very nice guy and she is finding out that her “Once Upon a Time, Fairytale life was not all it was cracked up to be.

When the concierge or keeper of the flame at the Alexander invites his three tenants to join him to watch the TV show Downton Abbey each week each and every one of the women, given that their personalities are very different from each other begin connecting with the story of Downton Abbey and become fast friends who are helping each other to get through their many trials and tribulations. This is a really fun read and I highly recommend it to any and all readers.

When the concierge of The Alexander, a historic Atlanta apartment building, invites his fellow residents to join him for weekly screenings of Downton Abbey, four very different people find themselves connecting with the addictive drama, and—even more unexpectedly—with each other…

Samantha Davis married young and for the wrong reason: the security of old Atlanta money—for herself and for her orphaned brother and sister. She never expected her marriage to be complicated by love and compromised by a shattering family betrayal.

Claire Walker is now an empty nester and struggling author who left her home in the suburbs for the old world charm of The Alexander, and for a new and productive life. But she soon wonders if clinging to old dreams can be more destructive than having no dreams at all.

And then there’s Brooke MacKenzie, a woman in constant battle with her faithless ex-husband. She’s just starting to realize that it’s time to take a deep breath and come to terms with the fact that her life is not the fairy tale she thought it would be.

For Samantha, Claire, Brooke—and Edward, who arranges the weekly gatherings—it will be a season of surprises as they forge a bond that will sustain them through some of life’s hardest moments—all of it reflected in the unfolding drama, comedy, and convergent lives of Downton Abbey.
