Murder in the Afternoon

A Kate Shackleton Mystery

Murder In The Afternoon starts with siblings, Harriet and Austin who are on their way to a quarry where their father works. The children have always been scared of the quarry but decide to meet their dad anyway. When they arrive they find their father’s dead body whereupon they take off running to find help. When the police go to investigate the death they can’t find a body and make up their minds that Harriet and Austin made it all up and Ethan has simply run away and deserted his family. The children’s mother is out shopping while they are on their quest to find father. Mary Jane Armstrong, the mother has had an argument with her husband, Ethan and he had gone off to work on a Saturday on a special sun dial that was ordered for the local lady of the manor for her birthday. Now, on to Kate Shackleton, whose husband is MIA from World War I but, Kate insists that he is still alive. When Kate was an infant she was adopted by a police officer and his wife and has never been the slightest bit interested in her birth family. Things are about to change when, in the middle of the night, Mary Jane, mother of Harriet and Austin, pounds on Kate’s door announcing that she is Kate’s long lost sister. Mary Jane tells Kate that her husband was murdered and Mary Jane is about to be accused of the crime. From here on the story becomes a puzzle and a very good mystery. Mary Jane definitely has some secrets, along with a hefty bank account that no one knows about. Ethan’s body is finally found at the quarry and his murder is being investigated by the police and they are looking at Mary Jane for the culprit. This book hands the reader one good puzzle after another and all will look forward to the finish to see what comes next.

Book Blurb for Murder in the Afternoon

Dead one minute…

Young Harriet and her brother Austin have always been scared of the quarry where their stone mason father works. So when they find him dead on the cold ground, they rush off quickly to look for some help.

Alive the next?

When help arrives, however, the quarry is deserted and there is no sign of the body. Were the children mistaken? Is their father not dead? Did he simply get up and run away?

A sinister disappearing act

It seems like another unusual case requiring the expertise of Kate Shackleton--and Mary Jane, the children's mother, is adamant that only she can help.  But Mary Jane is hiding something--a secret from Kate's past that raises the stakes and puts both Kate and her family at risk.
