This book is one of the best I’ve read in a long time, a mixture of San Francisco history after the great quake and fire in 1906, along with a bit of the supernatural which introduces Delia’s Shadow. Delia ran away from San Francisco after the quake as she lost both her parents while she was on a trip with her friend Sadie and Sadie’s mom Esther, who took care of Delia when she lost her parents. She had a difficult time in San Francisco as she was always seeing spirits of the many casualties in the city. She went across the country to New York to see if the spirits would cease. Mostly, they did but she is still being haunted by a young woman that seems to want to go back to the city by the bay. So, Delia and her shadow go back to live with Sophie and Esther. Sophie has become engaged to be married while Delia was away and her mom, Esther, is ill. Delia has come back partly to help Sophie plan her wedding but the ghost won’t go away and seems to want something from Delia and won’t leave until Delia figures out what it is.
Jack is Sophie’s fiancé and is a police officer and his partner is Gabe, who lost his wife in the quake and Sophie is bound and determined that he would be a good catch for Delia. There have been some gruesome murders in the city and the perpetrator is on the hunt for people attending the Pan-Pacific Exposition. Jack and Gabe are working on the case and they both believe that this is the same serial killer that was in business 30 years previously. Delia’s ghost, or shadow as she calls her is beginning to go into Delia’s dreams and show her things that happened previously and definitely knows something about these old murders.
Delia’s Shadow kept me reading for a one-day read as I could not put it down. It is a hard story at times but, the romances between the two girls and their policemen were very sweet relationships and the climax was very gritty and happened on the last few pages of the book. I was certainly taken with this story and hope that the author has some more of them in her head. I loved it!!!!
It is the dawn of a new century in San Francisco and Delia Martin is a wealthy young woman whose life appears ideal. But a dark secret colors her life, for Delia’s most loyal companions are ghosts, as she has been gifted (or some would say cursed) with an ability to peer across to the other side.
Since the great quake rocked her city in 1906, Delia has been haunted by an avalanche of the dead clamoring for her help. Delia flees to the other side of the continent, hoping to gain some peace. After several years in New York, Delia believes she is free…until one determined specter appears and she realizes that she must return to the City by the Bay in order to put this tortured soul to rest.
It will not be easy, as the ghost is only one of the many victims of a serial killer who was never caught. A killer who after thirty years is killing again.
And who is now aware of Delia’s existence.
