Want to indulge in a guilty pleasure? Nicola Cornick has crafted a powerful tale of love and betrayal in One Wicked Sin, the second book in her Scandalous Women of the Ton series. Lottie Palliser is a beautiful and crafty heroine that is equally matched by her hero, Ethan Ryder. Lottie’s childhood and failed marriage taught her that men would always betray her so her decision to approach men and sex in a mercenary manner is understandable. Ethan’s childhood taught him that the rich and powerful always get their way and that the British people had an air of superiority that desperately needed to be curbed.
The scenes with Lottie and Ethan are full of sexual tension and lively conversation; they can’t get enough of each other. Neither Lottie nor Ethan has allowed anyone to get emotionally close, yet it is what they crave from each other. When presented with the opportunity to betray Ethan for financial gain and entry back into her family, at first Lottie agrees but soon realizes that more is at stake and she decides to stand by Ethan. Meanwhile, Ethan begins to realize that he can’t imagine a life without Lottie at his side; her sense of adventure and her willingness to surrender to him have made her his perfect match.
The secondary characters are well written and provide a good deal of support for the story, from Ethan’s hateful father, who made it easy to understand Ethan’s choices, to Lottie’s ex-husband, whose masquerade party provided a good dose of humor. The author also added the subplot of a traitor among Ethan’s fellow prisoners and spies and the resolution of that element provided Lottie with another opportunity to shine and prove that she was more than just a beautiful mistress- her morality would no longer be questioned. The story has a happy ever after type ending, which was just what I felt the story needed and left me looking forward to the next book in this series by Ms. Cornick.
