Caffey Matthews left behind her wealthy life in Manhattan knowing she's being pursued by her dead husband's enemies. Finding out about his financial crimes and suicide had devastated her. Now, hiding her identity, frightened and alone, she finds refuge in a remote California ranch community. Starting her life over and surrounded by friendly community, Caffey reclaims her faith and trust in God.
Private investigator Rhee Ryland has finally caught up with Caffey Matthews. Believing she was involved in her late husband's financial schemes, his clients want him to bring her back to New York for justice. He didn't expect to fall in love with her or to reconnect with his cowboy roots in the little town of Rancho Lorena. Will Rhee's fond memories of his childhood on a ranch and his mother's faith bring him back to his childhood belief in God?
Faithful Danger by Tanya Hanson is a fast paced, second chance romance with likeable characters and sharp dialogue. Ms. Hanson's descriptions of the fictional town of Rancho Lorena are interesting and made me want to visit California's olive farming area. While both main characters are not only on a journey of self re-discovery and love, they are also on a journey to reclaiming their childhood faith in God and Ms. Hanson did a good job of blending that into their story.
Born Katherine Morton, "Caffey Matthews", is a changed woman. No longer blond and dressed in designer clothes, she's content hiding out in a small California ranching community where she feels accepted and loved. Still paying for the bad decision of marrying Everett Bedford Bradford, a man who created his own version of a Ponzi scheme, Caffey has gone back to her childhood faith. She's secretly reconnected with her parents in Montana, thanks to the help of a close friend and her fianc‚e.
During her friend's wedding ceremony, Caffey realizes how much she misses being in love with someone, and having someone she can trust love her back. I liked how Ms. Hanson developed Caffey's character; she's like a lot of young women who are impressed by an older, successful man who sweeps them off their feet with attention and romance. Unfortunately, in Caffey's case, the man wasn't honorable and what started out as love became tarnished by the reality of who her husband really was, what he did, and the fact she now has to hide out from people who think she knows where her deceased husband stashed his money.
Rhee Ryland is a hot, successful, private investigator hired by clients in New York to track down Katherine Morton Bedford Bradford, the wife of a deceased investor who swindled his clients out of millions of dollars. Having tracked down her new and secret identity, Caffey Matthews, he invites himself to her friend's wedding in an effort to get close to her, place a tracking device, and provide his clients with her exact location. He didn't expect to be attracted to her or to become ashamed of all the lies he tells in an effort to do his job. When he attends church with her the day after the wedding, Rhee is reminded of the young believer he had been and begins to take a look at his life. He's not sure he likes what he sees. He also realizes Caffey doesn't have her dead husband's money, and believes she was a victim just like his clients.
The scenes between Caffey and Rhee are well done but move really fast. In fact, the pace of the whole book is fairly fast as almost all of the action takes place over three days. The romance is believable because it's based on instant attraction. Both characters realize they will really need to get to know the other person on a deeper level before a relationship between them can go anywhere. Plus, they both have issues they need to work through, Rhee's rediscovery of his childhood faith and Caffey's need to stop hiding. She needs to be able to fully reconnect with her family and who she is.
The end of the story is full of action when Rhee is attacked and Caffey is kidnapped by a villainous character from her past, whose appearance was a complete surprise to me. Will Rhee be able to help the police locate Caffey in time? You'll have to read Faithful Danger to find out.
After her husband's financial crimes and suicide, Caffey Matthews leaves behind her wealthy Manhattan life-knowing her husband's enemies are in pursuit. Frightened and alone, Caffey hides her identity and finds succor in the remote California ranch land, which helps her to reclaim faith and trust in God.
Believing Caffey is involved in her late husband's misdeeds, cowboy-turned high-priced private investigator Rhee Ryland arrives in Rancho Lorena ready to haul her back to justice. He doesn't expect to fall in love with her. Even more surprising is his return to his childhood Lord.
