Grant and Vivi Michaelson have been married for ten years; they have a happy marriage with an active sex life and are comfortable sharing their fantasies with each other. They trust each other and are comfortable with how things are. One night Vivi shares a fantasy that she has never voiced before, a fantasy to have a ménage involving their mutual best friend, Cade Lorens. She confides that she has secretly been fantasizing about this for some time and is somewhat surprised to find that Grant has had a similar fantasy- of the three of them together. They mutually agree to ask Cade to join them in bed, for what they plan to be a one time encounter. They decide the perfect opportunity is to ask him when he comes to their home for a BBQ prior to going on their annual lake trip.
Grant has some reservations, he’s not attracted to men but he is attracted to Cade, something that he’s never understood. He’s worried that it might change his relationship with Vivi, not because he will love her less but because she might judge him for wanting to touch Cade. Grant has some unresolved issues about his sexuality that he has never confronted. Meanwhile, Vivi is having reservations herself, she realizes that this is risky for all of their relationships and she’s somewhat afraid that her husband’s attraction to Cade could lead to her losing her place in their marriage.
Cade Lorens has always been attracted and partially in love with Vivi but their timing has always been off, they’ve never been single at the same time. He’s always been attracted to Grant but he knows that his friend is as close as a brother and he’s never wanted to risk alienating him. An incident that occurred between the two men when they were young teens has always been quietly present in both men’s mind but has never been resolved. Cade has a failed marriage in his past and he values the love and friendship that he has with Grant and Vivi and would never do anything to jeopardize that relationship.
Grant gets the opportunity to speak with Cade alone and confide what he and Vivi want. Cade is afraid to risk what they have, but he’s known for some time that he loves his friends and that the attraction is not going away any time soon. Cade has always had romantic interest in both Grant and Vivi and decides that as long as there are established guidelines that they can at least have one encounter without doing any lasting damage to their relationship.
Ms. Inez does a good job of choreographing the emotions that these characters are experiencing as their relationships are about to change. All three characters grow emotionally throughout the story and realize new things about themselves and about each other. The dialogue between Grant, Vivi and Cade is honest and their encounter is hot. The characters realize that their relationship has always been about the three of them together and that it can continue to be about the three of them. I enjoyed reading this story and look forward to reading more of Ms. Inez work.
