One of the greatest love stories ever told Jones intertwines a compelling story of soulful romance, sorrow, loss and even tragedy within the boundaries of her novel, The Sharp Hook of Love.
When I first became aware of this book I noticed how the story of Heloise and Abelard was compared to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. As much as I love Shakespeare and his own writings he does not compare to Jones. She is a modern day poet having discovered her own muse in the true accounts of Heloise and Abelard and the romance that binds them together for eternity.
Her writing is perfection. The story captures the hearts of her readers and I highly applaud Jones for bringing the story of lost lovers to life in a such a modern world that is not only believable but reminds us all of what it means to truly love someone. The story is of real romance, the kind forgotten and the lives affected by such burning love and the tragedy that is the aftermath of such a love.
Until this novel I was unfamiliar with both Heloise and Abelard but as I started to read this book I felt as though I had always known the story and that is because Jones brought to life such a remarkable read that I will forever cherish this book as well as the both Heloise and Abelard. As a reader a can sympathize with Heloise and even with Abelard. Their love was forbidden to society, but their love was interbound whether by lust or by fate they chose to defy all laws so that their love could endure.
Having read the book from Heloise's point of view I admire her courage. She was a woman of the twelfth century, a time when a woman was highly frowned upon by the church for the sins of men. Her bravery is astonishing and I admire her strength. As for Abelard he is a romantic and it is easy to see why Heloise loved him as much she did. Together, they both changed the course of romance throughout the centuries and with their love inspired the world.
This is the first novel to have ever been written about Heloise and Abelard. I cannot recommend it enough to all readers. I will read and reread the pages of this book until the pages are no longer intact because there is no other book like The Sharp Hook Love and I doubt there will ever be again...
The first retelling of the passionate, twelfth-century love story since the discovery of 113 lost love letters between Heloise d’Argenteuil and Pierre Abelard—the original Romeo and Juliet.
"While I sleep you never leave me, and after I wake I see you, as soon as I open my eyes, even before the light of day itself." —Abelard to Heloise
Among the young women of twelfth-century Paris, Heloise d’Argenteuil stands apart. Extraordinarily educated and quick-witted, she is being groomed by her uncle to become an abbess in the service of God.
But with one encounter, her destiny changes forever. Pierre Abelard, headmaster at the Notre-Dame Cloister School, is acclaimed as one of the greatest philosophers in France. His controversial reputation only adds to his allure, yet despite the legions of women swooning over his poetry and dashing looks, he is captivated by the brilliant Heloise alone. As their relationship blossoms from a meeting of the minds to a forbidden love affair, both Heloise and Abelard must choose between love, duty, and ambition.
Sherry Jones weaves the lovers’ own words into an evocative account of desire and sacrifice. As intimate as it is erotic, as devastating as it is beautiful, The Sharp Hook of Love is a poignant, tender tribute to one of history’s greatest romances, and to love’s power to transform and endure.
