Honestly, I do not think that a romance reader can do better than Laura Kaye's Hard Ink series!
I have to confess this novel is the most anticipated read of the year for me and I am so relieved that I did not have to wait for it! I loved it even if I still enjoyed the first book of the series, Hard As It Gets, a little more. I still relished Shane and Crystal's story in Hard As You Can.
I do have to suggest reading the first book of the series, Hard As it Gets, prior to reading the squeal. Most of the action is a follow up from book one and there are many connections that are made in the squeal that are introduced to readers in the first book.
As for Crystal, the heroine there really isn't much to dislike about her character. Her main goal is to protect her younger sister. Crystal has endured the consequences of her lifestyle, but she will stop at nothing to protect her younger sibling even if that means she is dangerously falling for Shane, an ex-solider that she meets one night at a strip club.
Shane is the only guy that can help Crystal. Trusting his gut Shane knows that there is much more to the gorgeous waitress than she is letting on and he is going to get to the bottom of it. Falling for Crystal is the easy part, seducing her to the point that she will learn to trust him is the hardest. By the time Shane is through with Crystal she is going to fall hard for the Hard Ink solider and the outcome just might have dangerous consequences!
This novel is not a reader's ideal romance read. I think it is steamier, action packed and has an excellent writing flow. In fact I have been reading every novel that Kaye has released since I first decided to pick up one of her novels last year. She has yet to disappointment me with any novels that she writes, but the Hard Ink series my all-time favorite!
Ever since hard-bodied, drop-dead-charming Shane McCallan strolled into the dance club where Crystal Dean works, he's shown a knack for getting beneath her defenses. For her little sister's sake, Crystal can't get too close. Until her job and Shane's mission intersect, and he reveals talents that go deeper than she could have guessed.
Shane would never turn his back on a friend in need, especially a former Special Forces teammate running a dangerous, off-the-books operation. Nor can he walk away from Crystal. The gorgeous waitress is hiding secrets she doesn't want him to uncover. Too bad. He's exactly the man she needs to protect her sister, her life, and her heart. All he has to do is convince her that when something feels this good, you hold on as hard as you can--and never let go.
