From the first time I set my sights on a paranormal novel that featured dragon shapeshifting heroes I have been caught up in the inviting and pristine world of new, alpha heroes and for the most part I have enjoyed the ride. I was however a little disappointed with Darkest Flame Part One as I didn't think there was enough character interaction nor romance for the this installment to carry the darker depth that I was expecting when I selected this for review.
I usually credit author Donna Grant for providing her readers with unique and equally refreshing plots and this trait remained true even in Darkest Flame Part One. Still, I really expected the hero to portray a much darker, almost Gothic personality as that tends to be how many authors are featuring dragon hero novels and I very much like that theme. I would have really liked to seen Grant explore the hero much more as I felt like I couldn't understand nor get to know him on a reader/hero level that I expect to find in any novel that I read.
In many ways the first part seemed overly rushed. There was hardly the connection exchanged deep enough between the hero and heroine and I felt like the romance was just gliding in the background waiting to be further explored. I wanted to see sexier chemistry and intense heat levels not so much along the lines of Erotic content, but just deeper and more realistic.
Darkest Flame Part One is still an installment that I found to be enjoyable, even though it did contain many flaws for me personally. I do think it’s impossible not to give Grant some praise with her chosen writing style because it is entertaining for the most part and I have been reading her novels for a few years now. I had high hopes for her dragon series that I have kept up with since I first learned the news that she was going to be writing such a series.
Perhaps if the Darkest Flame Part One was longer I would have enjoyed it more. There are just so many pieces missing out of the first part that I had a longing to know more information. In some ways this mystery is worth the read and in other ways I feel like I will always be on the outside looking in with this installment.
In Darkest Flame by Donna Grant, the Dark Kings have fought for centuries to preserve their dragon magic. But one of the most powerful warriors of his kind will be put to the ultimate test. Is he strong enough to resist his greatest temptations? Or will he be forced to surrender—body and soul?
