When I was first invited by the publisher to review this title I wasn't sure what to expect. I accepted the novel blind and yet instantly as soon as I read the opening line of the first chapter I was hooked! This book was a devouring read. I simply could not get enough of the hero. I'm happy to offer this book a large amount of praise.
First, I want to point out that this book is not a standard, western romance and I am so thankful. Finally an author such as Otto has delivered a romance with a cowboy that is worth winning me over as a reader and Levi was that cowboy. I very much adored his rugged character. He was written perfectly with both his charm and his boldness.
Moving on to Carrie. She’s our heroine. My heart went out to her from the moment I met her. She had so much going on in her life that I could really relate to her. I was happy to see that she and Levi were able to bring the past back to life and form a new romance that was well worth the fight it took both of them to win in order for their romance to be a happy-ever-after one.
As for the plot, it wasn't always a smooth ride. There were a few bumps along the way that I believe were necessary for the story to grow along with Carrie and Levi. I really enjoyed the backdrop of their stories before arriving to the present day romance. It isn't always easy to maintain a steady pace with western plots, but Otto did a great job.
Lastly I want to mention the author's writing style. This was another trait that I loved about this book. The story felt as if I was involved in the lives of the characters rather than being a reader. In the moment is where I really want to be rooted when reading a story. I rooted for the characters, loved the overall story and enjoyed my time spent with this book. Otto certainly made me a fan!
He's always been her weakness...
Injured and discharged, Marine Levi Haywood has returned to his family's ranch to heal and start a new life. After all, once a cowboy, always a cowboy. The only problem? Life at the ranch has moved on since he joined the service, and suddenly his role in the family business is much less clear. And things get a lot more confusing when the woman he left behind returns home.
Carrie Lynn Waite has never known a time when she didn't love Levi. They were childhood sweethearts, but because of her health, she was forced to move to the city, away from the ranching life. Now Carrie's come home only to learn her family's ranch is in trouble and Levi is back, along with an undeniable attraction she can't resist. But some things never change, forcing Carrie to choose the future laid out before her...or the cowboy she could never resist.
