Underwater

The Mer of Pend Oreille

Confined to a wheelchair, Luna Prosser doesn’t always look on the bright side of life; it’s hard to when your football star boyfriend dumps you and everyone starts to treat you as an invalid. Despite the injury Luna is a spunky and outspoken character whom the reader can’t help but to adore. She’s got hair dyed black and a septum piercing which adds to her kick-ass heroine façade. One day an amazingly gorgeous new student, Saxon, introduces himself to Luna and a crush develops. Luna can’t believe that the hot tattooed guy has taken notice to her.

As their attraction develops, Luna suspects Saxon isn’t telling her the full truth about his life. Saxon finally divulges that he lives in the bottom of Pend Oreille Lake, and is a merman. According to Saxon, all new adult mers must go ashore and find a mate which they then drown and turn into a mer. Because of pollution, the mers are dwindling and the council has taken extreme measures to ensure the continuance of their race. However, as love blossoms Saxon cannot take Luna underwater even though the punishment for disobedience is death. Will Saxon and Luna beat the odds and remain together? Or does one lover have to make the ultimate sacrifice?

Underwater is a delightful read with elements of mythology mixed with current troubles. For example, Saxon states the mer race is dwindling due to toxic waste being dumped in the water. This is a new take on contemporary mermaid stories and lore. However, I was disappointed that one thread was left unfinished. In the beginning of the novel Luna recounts her namesake, a Grandmother, who fell into the lake and drowned. After learning the history of the Pend Oreille Lake mer clan, was Grandma a mermaid? Or did she truly drown? This was never clarified unfortunately.

The heroine of the story, Luna, was such a fresh breath of air since she wasn’t your usual Young Adult teenage girl. Luna has faced many hardships in her life yet still finds joy in everyday aspects even though she is submitted to a wheelchair. The reader watches Luna gain her confidence and happiness back as she re-discovers herself and true love.
