A contingent has been sent from Earth in order to get rid of the genetically modified humans who live on Marseguro, a watery based planet that is very far from Earth. There is a catch in that there is a plague that will, in turn, destroy any unmodified humans who are not vaccinated against it. Once the Warriors were defeated, the Marsegurans were more than ready to start returning to normal.
What couldn't be anticipated were Chris Keating's actions. The man turned traitor and returned to Earth, unwittingly carrying the plague back with him. This prompted Richard Hanson, grandson of the man who originally created the Selkies, and his allies to bring the vaccine to Earth. But will things work out for any of them?
I found the book to have an intriguing take on genetic modification and what could go wrong. It also talks about obsession, arrogance, and a rigidly imposed belief that does not see anything beyond it. The book also takes a look into behind the Body's power structure and how it does and doesn't trap the top ranks into the beliefs of the leader's predecessors.
Terra Insegura also shows through its characters how people who may not entirely trust each other can, in the end, respect each other and learn to work together.
A very good read.
From the author of marseguro-The battle for survival returns to earth
Marseguro, a water world far from Earth, is home to a colony of humans and the Selkies, a water-dwelling race created from modified human DNA. For seventy years the colony has lived in peace. Then Earth discovers Marseguro, and a strike force is sent to eradicate this "abomination." But Marseguro has created a genetically tailored plague to use against Earth's Holy Warriors. With the enemy defeated, the people of Marseguro feel they are safe. But Chris Keating, the traitor who signaled Marseguro's location to the Holy Warriors, has fled to Earth, unknowingly carrying the deadly plague within him. The people of Marseguro feel they must send a ship to Earth with a life-saving vaccine. Only time will tell what awaits them when they reach their destination.
