Sam Keller lives with his aunt and uncle in Iowa, working in their pharmacy, going to college in order to achieve a nursing degree, and feels as if he is never going to achieve his goals...at least if he stays where he is.
His life takes a decided turn the day Mitch Tedsoe, an interstate trucker, drops a load off across the street from the pharmacy.
What starts off as a couple casual meetings between the two men evolves into something more when Sam leaves his life temporarily behind to go with Mitch while the trucker delivers his loads. The trip opens Sam up to new experiences and leaves Mitch rethinking a few things.
Sam finds himself gaining a new confidence, even as he tries to figure out if there is a way to be able to have both the kind of work he has gone to school for and a relationship with Mitch. Mitch, meanwhile, comes to terms with his past and with the future he may or may not have with Sam.
Special Delivery is a study of exploration, finding out what your limits are, and with whom you want to explore those limits. Overall, Special Delivery is a good, page turning read. While some readers may be uncomfortable reading some of the scenes, they enrich the storyline. The interaction between Sam and Mitch, as well as the interactions both have with various characters, is the keystone to the story - how they see themselves, how others see them, and how they build their relationship.
Sam Keller knows he’ll never find the excitement he craves in Middleton, Iowa—not while he’s busting his ass in nursing school and paying rent by slaving away in a pharmacy stockroom. But before his mother died, he promised her he’d grow up to be a good man, so he needs a stable career and a good husband, not a dead-end job and empty sex.
Then Sam meets Mitch Tedsoe, an independent trucker who makes a delivery to a shop across the alley. Innocent flirting quickly leads to an affair, and when Mitch offers to take Sam on a road trip west, Sam jumps at the chance for adventure with his fantasy man... but Mitch also comes with a past. A threesome with the other man in Mitch’s life would have been just another kinky ride, but somewhere between the Mississippi River and the Colorado Rockies, Sam falls in love.
But can a relationship born out of escape and indulgence become something that lasts? Will a fantasy man be willing to settle down into reality, or is the adventure and excitement Sam finds with Mitch just another stop on a delivery man’s journey? For better or for worse, eventually Sam is going to discover the answer, because no matter how far away he travels, eventually all roads lead home.
