The Revelation

Wickford High, #1

Let me say this up front, Wickford High's premise was intriguing. It's another boarding school paranormal young adult book, but Vicky was slightly more...dark then other characters and not because she was tricked into it, but because it's her nature to come out swinging.

My problems encompass everything else unfortunately. I felt kind of like I was reading the Cliff Notes version of a longer novel. Fuller would jump from plot point to plot point with little transitioning and even less subtly. Vicky arrives, Vicky meets hot guy, Vicky is bullied, Vicky meets another victim of said bully, hot guy warns her away from bully, secrets are spoken of, showdown with bully, date with hot guy...that all happens in the span of one day. What usually takes a book the better part of the story to get through just happens.

The characters are also very cookie cutter. Mysterious hot guy, angry girl rival, parental unit keeping secrets, mean school teachers, scared classmate...there's no depth to any of them. They serve one purpose and one purpose alone. Except perhaps Luke and Vicky, but they're insta-attraction and insta-romance was flat and uninspiring.

As I said Vicky is a big fan of taking action, which I think if it had been developed over the course of a longer novel would have given the scene with Sara in the bathroom the right amount of punch to be truly awe-inspiring. Unfortunately having her state, repeatedly, that she's not scared of Sara and can take her is a poor substitute.

The bottom line is that the story felt incomplete, rushed and fell flat. I wanted to know more about Vicky, but more than that even I would have preferred a well fleshed out story.
