Nocturne City Series, Book 4
It is no secret that I love Ms. Kittredge’s work. She consistently writes great stories that I have always hoped I would find. She doesn’t disappoint with this, the fourth book in the Nocturne City series. Luna Wilder, Lieutenant in charge of the Supernatural Crime Squad (a promotion that happened at the end of Second Skin) has matured since we last saw her. Being in charge of a group of detectives, regardless of the fact that they are mostly misfits from other areas of the Nocturne City Police Department; has been good for her. When homes start burning and strange supernatural creatures never seen before start appearing: selkies, trolls, etc; the case falls to the SCS. Then an ATF agent named Fagin starts butting in, Luna isn’t amused. When things really start to get out of hand, Luna has to ask Fagin for help as well as a fugitive that she thought she would never see again. In order to keep her job, her department, as well as her skin, Luna needs to stop whoever is behind these crimes before the city is destroyed.
It is so nice to see a character grow and mature as you would hope, learning from mistakes and trying not to repeat them. Luna has learned to tempered her were and doesn’t fly off the handle, as much. Ms. Kittredge has the skill to take seemingly random occurrences and weave them together. The result is a taunt mystery, leaving the reader hanging on for the ride. I was suspicious of Agent Fagin, that he was hiding something. When that feeling proved correct, I felt vindicated but still surprised as it was not what I was expecting. I have a feeling that things will continue to get more interesting in Nocturne City, but I managed to resist the urge to read the teaser in the back for Daemon Bound. Otherwise it wouldn’t be pretty to watch as I go crazy waiting for it to come out.
