Tempest Rising

I was so thrilled when Ms. Peeler, or perhaps I should say Dr. Peeler, graciously agreed to send me her debut novel, Tempest Rising. Selkies are a rare breed among paranormal/urban fantasy these days so that piqued my interest. The more I heard about the book, the more I wanted to get my hands on it asap! I am very pleased to report that this is a sweet, sexy read.

Jane True sounds similar to Sookie Stackhouse. Both grew up in a small town, seen as odd by the townsfolk, and proceed to find out that their life isn’t as boring and normal as they once thought. Jane is a little different though. She once was loved. She kept one tiny secret from her love and it resulted in death. Two of the townsfolk don’t care for her very much as a result. They make it very difficult for her to live in Rockabill. Most people would have left Rockabill but Jane couldn’t. Her father needs her and he doesn’t want to live anywhere else. The relationship between Jane and her dad is really sweet. Things start to get a little crazy when Jane is out swimming one night and she finds a body in the water. She recognizes it as a newcomer to the town who rents one of the cottages. Jane panics and pulls it up onto the path to be discovered. The next day it is revealed to Jane that she isn’t human, that she is part of the supernatural community filled with vampires, shape shifters, selkies, kelpies, and all sorts of creatures. It comes as quite a revelation to Jane that she is not alone. Ryu, a vampire who comes to Rockabill to investigate the murder, comes to question Jane and help her with her assimilation into the community. What seems as a simple investigation soon becomes a tangle of intrigue, prejudice, and danger.

Jane is quite simply a lovely character. She is easy to care about as you see how much she loves her dad and her friends. Those friends are quite interesting all on their own. Ryu is a good love interest and I love how he makes Jane feel. I must admit though that another character was much more intriguing and I hope there is a romance between him and Jane at some point. The author has done a fabulous job in researching the different creatures that populate her world and you discover them as Jane does, which makes this reader very happy. I am very eager to learn more about this world and see more of Jane’s adventures. There is a lovely sense of humor that runs throughout the novel. Jane starts to blossom as the book progresses and I hope this continues. There are some sinister moments where you really are not sure if Jane or Ryu will make it out alive. The last third of the book was really action packed. The romantic scenes are fabulously done. Ms. Peeler is going to have a great future in publishing. If you love Sookie Stackhouse, you will love Jane True! I will be waiting impatiently for the next Jane True book!

Book Blurb for Tempest Rising

Living in small town Rockabill, Maine, Jane True always knew she didn't quite fit in with so-called normal society. During her nightly, clandestine swim in the freezing winter ocean, a grisly find leads Jane to startling revelations about her heritage: she is only half-human.

Now, Jane must enter a world filled with supernatural creatures alternatively terrifying, beautiful, and deadly- all of which perfectly describe her new "friend," Ryu, a gorgeous and powerful vampire.

It is a world where nothing can be taken for granted: a dog can heal with a lick; spirits bag your groceries; and whatever you do, never-ever-rub the genie's lamp.

If you loveSookie Stackhouse, then you'll want to dive into Nicole Peeler's enchanting debut novel.
