Anna Strong Series #5
Retribution is the fifth book about Anna Strong and it is quite a pivotal point in the series. Anna is at a point in her life where she has moved her family out of harms way. Now she can focus on what she wants out of her immortal life. That is until her friend Culebra turns up on the brink of death. All signs point to an old nemesis. At the same time Williams, her former mentor, contacts her with a plea for help. He needs her to investigate a rash of young vampires being discovered completely drained. Feelings are still raw between Anna and Williams so she agrees. Will Anna be able to save Culebra and prevent any more deaths? Or will she regret getting involved?
This was a solid installment in the Anna Strong series. Anna is a strong, physically adept vampire who has a good mind and a strong sense of loyalty. The problem with Williams and his methods has put a wedge between him and Anna. It doesn’t help that Anna doesn’t agree with his assessment that she is The One. I really enjoy the fact that she doesn’t embrace this. She wants to live as close to human as she can and not lose her friends and family even though she must shield them from her true nature. That said, she has started to enjoy parts of her new reality in the physical prowess she possesses that make bounty hunting easier. There is a stark realism to Ms. Stein's work in spite of the fact that they are about vampires and the like. Things with Williams come to a head and Anna must make some hard choices. Anna makes these choices out of necessity knowing she has to live with her mistakes for the rest of her long life. The level of antagonism that has grown between her and Williams became quite intense and I am looking forward to seeing how that plays out in the next book. There was a small scene in the book that felt a little strange to me but it didn’t impact how much I enjoyed the book. I have spent many enjoyable hours with this series and I would urge any urban fantasy fans to pick up it up.
Book Blurb for Retribution
With her partner out of town, her family abroad, and her mentor estranged, newly-turned vampire Anna Strong is keeping a low profile.
But now young vampires are turning up dead, completely drained of their life force. And though Anna wants to say no when Williams, her former teacher and now leader of a supernatural enforcement squad, asks for her help, she can't. But soon, she'll wish she did.
