Homecoming

Mercy Thompson

Mercy Thompson Homecoming is a graphic novel prequel to the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. I was quite excited when I heard about this. I was curious to see how Mercy, Zee, and the gang would be portrayed in living color. This was a compilation of a four part series that was originally released over a period of months earlier this year. I was really pleased that they then released the entire thing in a hardbound volume. The story arc reveals how Mercy came to the Tri-cities area, came to live in her trailer and work for Zee. We also get to see how she first meets Adam and noses her way into werewolf business.

The artwork on the cover is fabulous, first off. The first chapter sets things up as Mercy is in town interviewing for a teaching position. She runs into a pack of werewolves when she is out one night in coyote form. They attack and another pack arrives to help Mercy. This is more than a little confusing to Mercy. Mercy looks how I pictured her, thank goodness. When Stefan came into the story, I didn’t recognize him at first. Stefan doesn’t look how I pictured him, looking a little more dead than I thought he would. It is a nice contrast to the werewolves, however, which makes it easy for the reader to determine who doesn’t have a pulse. Chapter two is where things got a little confusing. Frames seemed to be out of order and jumped around without making too much sense. We do get to see Zee and Uncle Mike and my favorite, Adam. Luckily, chapter three is smooth sailing. Apparently, the pack that attacked Mercy is a pack gone rogue. They are killing and eating humans. The Marrock sent Adam and his pack to clean things up. The Marrock wants Mercy to leave the area. So, of course, she wants to stay. She finds a place to live and a job; hardheaded is her middle name. Chapter four wraps things up and leaves us where Moon Called will start. Overall, except for the second chapter, I thought this was a great intro to the Mercy series. I don’t know that I would necessarily read it before reading the first four in the series but I would recommend that it be read after the first two. If you are a fan of the series, then you will definitely like adding this to your collection.

Book Blurb for Homecoming

Mercy Thompson is a walker, a magical being with the power to transform into a coyote. She lives on the fine line dividing the everyday world from a darker dimension, observing the supernatural community while standing apart.

When Mercy travels to the Tri-Cities of Washington for a job interview, she quickly finds herself smack-dab in the middle of a gang war between rival packs of werewolves. And as if fangs and fur weren’t bad enough, Mercy must deal with the scariest creature of all: her mother, who is convinced that Mercy is making a mess of her life and determined to set her daughter on the right course.

The thrilling adventures of Mercy Thompson–Moon Called, Blood Bound, and Iron Kissed–have topped the New York Times bestseller list. Now Mercy makes her comics debut in an exclusive new story created by Patricia Briggs. Mercy Thompson: Homecoming is sure to please longtime fans and capture new ones with its mix of unforgettable characters and thrilling supernatural intrigue.
