Lover Unbound

Black Dagger Brotherhood, #5

Lover Unbound is book five in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. J.R. Ward is a master storyteller and I waited with baited breath for Vishous’s story (even though Zsadist is my favorite, followed by Rhage). From book one it was obvious that Vishous is a complicated guy and that his story would not be an easy one. To recap, Vishous is the Brother with the visions, the mind reading, and the flammable hand. Highly intelligent, he handles all the computer, cell phone, and security measures for the Brotherhood. He also cleans the Omega dregs out of Butch. His formative years with his infamous father, the Bloodletter, didn’t infuse him with warm and fuzzy feelings. While on a routine patrol, he is mortally wounded and is taken to the hospital and operated on by a human surgeon, Jane, who awakens all the instincts of a bonded male. Unfortunately, V was just informed that his destiny is not under his command and must go down a path that doesn’t include Jane.

There has been lots of speculation by fans as to what might happen in this book. I not going to confirm or deny anything in this review as I think everyone should just read the book and find out. I did enjoy this book very much. I loved catching up with everyone and seeing where Phury’s story is going to take us. I can’t say that V is my favorite brother (see above) but I fell in love with him right along with Jane. The sensuality and longing are tangible and luscious. J.R. Ward has the amazing talent of taping into the reader’s senses of taste, touch, and smell. You can smell the bonding scent; feel the smooth skin overlaying powerful muscles. The only reason it doesn’t get a full five from me is that I am not sure how I feel about the ending. Don’t get me wrong I love the Brotherhood books. They are my favorite books ever. I am just not sure that I am completely happy with the ending. J.R. Ward did warn everyone on her message board that you would need tissues and she wasn’t kidding.

If you haven’t read the Brotherhood books, go out and get them, now. Start from the very beginning and get swept up in their world, their terminology, and their history. You will not regret it.

Book Blurb for Lover Unbound

Ruthless and brilliant, Vishous son of the Bloodletter possesses a destructive curse and a frightening ability to see the future. As a pretrans growing up in his father's war camp, he was tormented and abused. As a member of the Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of a human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels him to reveal his inner pain and taste true pleasure for the first time- until a destiny he didn't choose takes him into a future that cannot include her.
