Toby's life has always been strange. Being a changeling, one foot in the land of humans and one in the land of Faerie has just been the tip of the iceberg. Through the previous volumes, her journey has continued down this strange path and we have traveled with her. It would be impossible to travel down those dark roads and not feel close to Toby. In Late Eclipses, Lily, Lady of the Tea Gardens has fallen ill. Toby is called in to help find the cause and the cure. While on the hunt for that cure, another person close to Toby falls ill right in front of her. Undeniable signs are pointing Toby towards her old enemy, Oleander. Time is running out to stop the sickness and Toby's freedom is on the line. Will Toby be able to save them all including herself?
In Late Eclipses, Toby has settled into life after the events of An Artificial Night. May has moved in with Toby and it is sweet to watch them interact. They have become fast friends and Toby needs all the friends she can get. Toby is summoned to the Court of the Queen of the Mists. Suspicious, thy name is October as the Queen doesn't like her much, but she has to answer the summons. Things quickly spiral out control as Toby is made the Countess of Greengold by the Queen of the Mists. It is obvious that the Queen is up to something but before Toby can start to examine the situation, Marcia arrives with the news that Lily is very ill. After that, Toby is in a race to save the people she cares about as well as herself. Every time I finish a book in this series, I think "Oh, that was the best one! It can't get any better than that!" and then I get the next book. Ms. McGuire continues to improve on perfection with each volume. At one point, I was in a coffee shop desperate to find out what happened next. I completely forgot where I was and as events unfolded, I was suddenly aware that I was out in public with tears streaming down my face. Normally, I try not to attract attention like that in public but this is Toby and I just didn't care. These characters have become like family to me and my heart hurt by the end of the book. The language is haunting, painting pictures of such beauty and sorrow. There are some scenes that are so vivid in my head that I keep thinking about them at odd moments. Toby goes through a rough time in each book but she continues to shine with her courage and desire to save who she can and mourn when she fails. I can't talk about Toby without talking about Tybalt. Oh, Tybalt is still one of my favorite characters and he doesn't disappoint in this one. He reveals more of himself and his court to Toby and it is deliciously nervewracking to watch them together. I truly and deeply love this series and I can't recommend it highly enough.
October "Toby" Daye is half-human, half-fae-the only changeling who's earned knighthood. But when someone begins targeting her nearest and dearest, it becomes clear that Toby is being set up to take the fall for everything that's happening.
