House of Night Series #5
I really wanted to love this installment of the House of Night but unfortunately it wasn’t as strong as I expected at this point in the series. Zoey and company, including the red fledglings and Stevie Rae made it out of the fiasco that was the ending of Untamed. They hide themselves in the red fledglings home in the tunnels since Kalona won’t go anywhere near the ground again. Stevie Rae was injured and could have died from the arrow that Stark shot her with. Darius, a Son of Erebus warrior sworn to protect Zoey doctors Stevie Rae and removes the arrow. Zoey and her friends need to regroup and figure out what they are going to do to combat Kalona and Neferet before they succeed in declaring war with the humans. But events soon conspire against them and force them to return to the House of Night, the last place they want to be. Will they succeed in defeating Neferet and Kalona or will this be the end of them as well as the human race?
Kalona and Neferet are wonderfully evil and the Raven Mockers are sinister/creepy. The different mythologies that are woven into the story make me very happy. As I was reading Hunted, it took me a little time to realize that I wasn’t enjoying it. I came to realize that my discontent stemmed from Zoey’s relationship problems. It is hard with all the responsibility and power that Zoey has to remember that she is still just a teenager. However, she makes a big mistake when it comes to guys and seems to get into trouble by not sorting out her feelings before she acts. That bothered me as well as the fact that we still don’t get really in depth with the rest of her friends, the Twins and Damien and Jack. I know the focus of the series is Zoey followed by Aphrodite and Stevie Rae but I would like more details about the others.
I am very conflicted about the ending. I won’t go into details but it wasn’t what I expected at all. We don’t see a lot of Stevie Rae or Zoey’s grandmother but I am sure that will be rectified. The writing is still very good and I will tune in for the next book but I am hoping that Zoey is able to put some of her life in order as she doesn’t need to be distracted when she faces whatever is coming next.
Book Blurb for Hunted
What if the hottest guy in the world was hiding a nameless evil, and all he wanted was you?
At the start of this heart-pounding new installment of the bestselling House of Night series, Zoey’s friends have her back again and Stevie Rae and the red fledglings aren’t Neferet’s secrets any longer. But an unexpected danger has emerged. Neferet guards her powerful new consort, Kalona, and no one at the House of Night seems to understand the threat he poses. Kalona looks gorgeous, and he has the House of Night under his spell. A past life holds the key to breaking his rapidly spreading influence, but what if this past life shows Zoey secrets she doesn’t want to hear and truths she can’t face?
On the run and holed up in Tulsa’s Prohibition-era tunnels, Zoey and her gang must discover a way to deal with something that might bring them all down. Meanwhile, Zoey has a few other little problems. The red fledglings have cleaned up well – they’ve even managed to make the dark, creepy tunnels feel more like home – but are they really as friendly as they seem? On the boyfriend front, Zoey has a chance to make things right with super-hot ex-, Eric, but she can’t stop thinking about Stark, the archer who died in her arms after one unforgettable night, and she is driven to try to save him from Neferet’s sinister influence at all costs. Will anyone believe the power evil has to hide among us?
