Dark Elite, Book 2

Life has certainly changed for Lily Parker. In a short time, she has gone from small town to the Windy City, regular high school to prep school, normal to magic-wielding superhero. She has a lot on her plate; learning to use her magic, getting close to a certain guy, and saving the world. If life wasn’t strange enough, Lily and the other Adepts encounter some strange creatures in the tunnels. The source of these creatures must be the Reapers but they can’t prove it to their superiors. Then an unlikely informant points them in the direction of another inhabitant of the tunnels: the vampires. It is up to Lily and the gang to figure out what is going on and how to stop it. There is no rest for the weary when the Second City is at stake.

Well, I must say, I flew through this book! Where Firespell was definitely the first book in the series introducing characters and mapping out the world, Hexbound hits the ground running and doesn’t let up. The world of the good guys is expanded when we meet some members of another enclave. I really liked that as it was starting to feel like Scout and the gang were all that stood between the Reapers and all of Chicago. This combined with meeting some other regular people who know about the Reapers gives a real sense of community to the book. Instead of nameless, faceless people in a huge city, you have a network of people that help them fight the good fight. The romance aspect is raised a bit, for both Lily and Scout and is well done. It doesn’t overshadow the team aspect and the core of friendship which is the heart and soul of this series. Lily and Scout are still great characters. I love reading their interactions, their dialogue is so fun. What I found very interesting is that I felt a sense of unease, of distrust whenever a new character was introduced. Ms. Neill is adept at making you wonder if someone is who and what they say they are. It puts the reader off balance and brings you to the edge of your seat. This is particularly true of a character we met in the last book. I don’t want to give away anything but suffice to say that this character is making me wonder what they are really up to. I can’t wait to see what happens next, bring on book 3!
