Signet D’Marigold has led a lonely life, so lonely that she contemplates ending it. In the space of a day, that changes. Suddenly, she knows what her true talent is and how that can improve her position and worth in society. Vinni T'Vine's vision revealed Signet as a catalyst. As a catalyst, all throughout her adult life she has changed the lives around her for the better without being aware of it. It went unrecognized for so long since it was not a talent ever before seen on Celta. Vinni needs Signet to guide a noble child safely through her First Passage. The child’s parents also want a bodyguard living with Signet and their child to ensure safety. Cratag Maytree came to Druida City to find his family and a place for himself. He found that with T’Hawthorn and became the captain of his guard. Given into the position of bodyguard leaves a bad taste in his mouth but the silver lining is Signet. Cratag has always been attracted to her but never acted on it due to her status and his lack. Fortunately, being under the same roof moves them swiftly towards affection, desire, and ultimately love. But will that be enough to save them from the hidden danger and give them their happily ever after?
What I love about Robin D. Owens is that her books are simply delightful and a joy to read. They are futuristic fairy tales for adults. There is magic, talking cats, precocious children, prophets, teleportation, beautiful clothes, true love and passion. The descriptions of Celta and its people remind me of Impressionist paintings saturated with color and light. Signet is a sweet girl who transforms into a passionate and strong woman. Cratag for all his strength and skill as a warrior finally acts on his attraction to Signet but has to accept himself before he can be truly happy. Avellana, the noble child, is precious without being obnoxious. The danger of her not surviving her First Passage was very real. As the story progresses there is a pervasive sense that there is an unseen danger lurking. It was quite surprising when the source was revealed. I find this series to still be very original and a breath of fresh air. I always look forward to my foray into Ms. Owens’ world and I am never disappointed. This volume was no exception and I can’t wait for the next installment!
