Trifles and Folly, a quaint antique and curio shop in Charleston is more than it seems. Cassidy Kincaide runs the shop, purchasing dangerous items and keeping them from causing mayhem. Luckily, her ability to sense the history of anything she touches, comes in handy. Her silent partner is Sorren, a 500-year-old vampire, and her assistant manager, Teag, round out this cast of main characters. This story starts out pretty strong as we experience Charleston through the eyes of a native, the perfect setting for an urban fantasy. Seemingly random events start to connect and where it all is leading to is certainly sinister. Then, about halfway through the book is where my momentum faltered. I wanted to know the characters a bit more in order to be invested in their safety. They are coming up against quite a nasty fellow but I didn’t fear for them like I wanted to. The ending strengthened the characters and their commitment to the cause, keeping normals safe from the paranormal.
"Deadly Curiosities" is well written, sprinkled with historical tidbits that make the city of Charleston a character in and of itself. I do hope that the next book will shed more light on Cassidy and the gang.
Cassidy Kincaide owns Trifles & Folly, an antique/curio store and high-end pawn shop in Charleston, South Carolina that is more than what it seems. Dangerous magical and supernatural items sometimes find their way into mortal hands or onto the market, and Cassidy is part of a shadowy Alliance of mortals and mages whose job it is to take those deadly curiosities out of circulation.
Welcome to Trifles & Folly, an antique and curio shop with a dark secret. Proprietor Cassidy Kincaide continues a family tradition begun in 1670—acquiring and neutralizing dangerous supernatural items. It’s the perfect job for Cassidy, whose psychic gift lets her touch an object and know its history. Together with her business partner Sorren, a 500 year-old vampire and former jewel thief, Cassidy makes it her business to get infernal objects off the market. When mundane antiques suddenly become magically malicious, it’s time for Cassidy and Sorren to get rid of these Deadly Curiosities before the bodies start piling up.
