Daemon's Mark

Nocturne City, Book 5

Luna’s life has really changed from when we first met her. Luna is now a Lieutenant in charge of her own squad dealing with crimes involving weres. She has also been dating ATF Agent Will Fagin for six months solid with no bumps in their relationship road, which is a major milestone! Then in the middle of a date, Luna gets called down to the docks to a young female were named Lily found floating in the water missing her heart. Before she can say “Hex me,” Luna is neck deep in missing female weres, the Russian mob, and threats from the dead girl’s pack. Haunted by Lily’s ghost, Luna is driven to get to the bottom of her murder no matter what it costs her. Will Luna’s mouth finally get her into more trouble than she can handle?

When I first opened Daemon’s Mark, I thought I knew what to expect from Luna and NocturneCity, but I was wrong! We being with a somewhat typical case for Luna; called to the docks to investigate the murder of a very young were. Identified at the scene as Lily, the daughter of the alpha of the Dubois clan who has been in the water for approximately twelve hours and incidentally missing her heart! As soon as her parents identify the body, they start slinging threats at Luna. If she doesn’t come up with the guilty party asap and turn them over to Lily’s pack, they will come for Luna. As usual, Luna is unimpressed and moves to bring the killer to justice. She starts seeing Lily in her dreams, haunted by the young girl as well as having trouble controlling her beast. When you see this happening, it brings it home how much Luna has matured throughout the series and how far she is slipping. As this case leads into murky waters, I had to keep reading! I was quite surprised at the last third of the book; I was so tense the entire time and read it in one big bite. Ms. Kittredge has come a long way since Night Life and it is a pleasure to watch a good writer becoming a great writer. As to the ending, if this is the last book about Luna I would be okay with that. Luna has changed so much that I almost think she needs a rest but there were some intriguing threads left dangling. Perhaps Ms. Kittredge could be persuaded to tie them up for us.

Book Blurb for Daemon's Mark

Werewolf homicide detective Luna Wilder guards the fine line that separates Nocturne City’s humans from the weres and witches that roam its streets. Now, Luna must thwart a new evil more dangerous than anything she’s ever encountered.

Someone, or something, is setting fire to the homes of the city’s most infamous non-humans, racking up a body count that’s growing by the day. And strange, otherworldly creatures no one has seen before—selkies, trolls, and harpies—are causing chaos throughout the city. Racing to stop the carnage, Luna turns to sexy federal agent Will Fagin for help. As they work to uncover the source of the bloodshed, Luna’s attraction for Will deepens. But just as she learns Will’s darkest secret, Nocturne City is thrust into total chaos—leaving Luna and Will in a path of destruction they may not be able to stop…or survive.
