Bite Me!

The synopsis from the back says it all.

AJ Ashe isn't your typical seventeen-year-old vampire—as if there is such a thing! She's stuck in the middle of a huge fight between her two BFFs. Her ex-boyfriend—whom she's still totally in love with, by the way—is now her stepbrother. A former classmate—who, um, she may or may not have turned into a vampire—is stalking her. And now, apparently, the fate of humankind lies in her little undead hands. What ever happened to the good old days, when all a vampire girl had to worry about was the occasional zit and hiding her taste for blood?

AJ Ashe has a big problem. Her mother is marrying the man of her dreams. He is a great guy and really sweet to her mother but that isn’t the problem. The problem is that the great guy has a son, Ryan, who is AJ’s boyfriend. That wouldn’t bother some people but when you live in Mississippi; you don’t want to be a cliché. So boyfriend becomes brother which stinks since his smile makes her stomach flip. Add in the fact that AJ, her mom, and her twin sisters are vampires just icing on the cake. AJ is a great character and a very realistic one even if she is a vampire. She has a wit and a sweetness to her that I found charming in the extreme. In fact, all of the characters felt very genuine, like people I know. The vampires in this world have evolved; able to go out in the day, eat food so it adds to the believability. A cute title like Bite Me was deceptive. I almost expected it to be too sweetness and light even for a vampire book. That, however, wasn’t the case. AJ faces some scary situations when a classmate dies and she fears she is responsible. When he comes back from the dead and is stalking her, threatening to hurt her family is seriously intense, not to mention creepy! Her two best friends are a good support system for AJ but I am suspicious of her friend Malia. She comes back into AJ’s life just as everything is going wrong. It feels like she was maneuvering AJ, manipulating her, but it is just a hunch. We'll see if I am right in the sequel.

Ms. Francis has written a gem of a story with humor and family, magic and mayhem. I couldn’t put this book down and found myself flying through it in about a day. Now I need to get myself to a book store quick and get the next book, Love Sucks. I can't wait to see what happens next to AJ and her family. After that, I will be in trouble since there are no more books available by this wonderful author. I hope we see more from this talented lady in the near future.
