As Lie the Dead

Dreg City #2

As Lie the Dead starts off right where we left Evy, surveying the aftermath of the battle at the end of Three Days to Dead. Exhausted from her ordeal, she, with Wyatt, head to the apartment that she has inherited from Chalice to get some rest and regroup. Of course, that isn’t what happens. Phineas, one of the few remaining Owlkins, makes a dramatic entrance and asks her for a favor. She agrees since she feels so guilty about what happened to his people. That favor seems pretty minor until events start to steamroll. Suddenly, Evy has to find out the identity of the leaders of the Triads who call all the shots and hold them accountable for the Owlkins or a man she knows and respects will die.

This is one of those books that you read slowly so you don’t miss any details. As with any book whose plot takes place over a short period of time, it is intense. Hard hitting action is not a problem for Ms. Meding. Evy’s persona is changing in the aftermath of her death and reanimation in a new body. The baggage that came with her new life is a heavy load and it weighs her down with feelings and emotions that she suppressed or flat out ignored before. Also her world view is transforming as she steps out of her role as a member of the Triads. She is finally seeing that there are some serious problems in the system. Evy’s feelings for Wyatt are very powerful, I think mostly from a shared history. I do see the attraction but with the secrets he is keeping, it might be hard to build a solid relationship. It made seeing him as the one for Evy a little difficult. But it did bring Phineas to the forefront so, there you go. If there was going to be teams, I would so be Team Phineas! I did feel a little bit of confusion when the focus moved away from the initial objective but I do feel like she had to follow the clues. I think that there is more to learn before we finally see who is behind the Triads. Ms. Meding had done a great job in satisfying my initial curiosity while whetting my appetite for more. I look forward to further stories from this up and coming author.

Book Blurb for As Lie the Dead

Evangeline Stone, a rogue bounty hunter, never asked for a world divided between darkness and light . . .

. . . or the power to die and live again in someone else’s borrowed body. After a murder plot meant to take her out leaves an entire race of shapeshifters nearly extinct, Evy is gnawed by guilt. So when one of the few survivors of the slaughter enlists her aid, she feels duty-bound to help—even though protecting a frail, pregnant shifter is the last thing Evy needs, especially with the world going to hell around her.

Amid weres, Halfies, gremlins, vamps—and increasingly outgunned humans—a war for supremacy is brewing. With shifters demanding justice, her superiors desperate to control her, and an assassin on her trail, Evy discovers a horrifying conspiracy. And she may be the only person in the world who can stop it—unless, of course, her own side gets her first.
