This book kept me awake, reading way past my normal bedtime. The protagonist is clever, funny, and speaks with a compelling voice that drew me in to her story. Three years earlier, on Iris’s 14th birthday, there was a devastating event. When she awoke in the hospital, her life changed as suddenly she could see the evil at work in the world, represented by shadowy forms that clung to the living. Bright light forms also became visible only to her. Fewer in number, the light forms fought in opposition to the shadows.
This book solidly brings home the theme that evil is actively at work in our lives. It is imperative that we remain vigilant against the dark forces that seek to undermine us at every opportunity; beware those sneak attacks that confound and surprise, as well as other prolonged assaults that often masquerade as chronic, lingering malaise.
Fortunately, the shadows may be defeated. This book explores a young woman’s physical and spiritual growth as she is guided by some powerful friends. She undergoes the process of understanding her gift and learning how to use that knowledge in beneficial ways. It’s a clarion call to all of us, but most specifically our young people. Towards the end of the book, I personally felt the message got hammered home with less subtlety than I would have preferred, but the mystery and conflict leading up to the revelation was exciting, thought-provoking, and in full-measure, entertaining.
Iris Kohl lives in a world populated by murky shadows that surround, harass, and entice unsuspecting individuals toward evil. But she is the only one who can see them. She’s had this ability to see the shadows, as well as brilliantly glowing light figures, ever since an obscure, tragic incident on her fourteenth birthday three years earlier.
Although she’s learned to cope, the view of her world begins to shift upon the arrival of three mysterious characters. First, a handsome new teacher whose presence scares away shadows; second, a new friend with an awe-inspiring aura; and third, a mysterious and alluring new student whom Iris has a hard time resisting despite already having a boyfriend.
As the shadows invade and terrorize her own life and family, she must ultimately revisit the most horrific event of her life in order to learn her true identity and become the hero she was meant to be.
