John and Dove's story is pretty sweet and Wylde was a fun read, but I felt that it fell a little short of the mark for me romance-wise.
I'd been looking forward to John's story because he routinely breaks the fourth wall and that's catnip to me. Might not be everyone's cuppa tea though, because it does get a bit meta in there. I thought that the meta commentary had been toned down from before, which I thought was a pity, because if you're going to break the fourth wall, you might as well shatter it and in this book it felt like he wasn't sledgehammering it as much as he did before.
Back to the romance, or the somewhat lukewarm relationship exploration... I felt that the story relies too much on John's previous relationship with Dove and possibly on stuff that went on in previous books that I hadn't seen. I wanted to see how they interacted as adults, wanted to see how they fit together and worked together. Yet they barely were together for most of the book since most of it was a rescue mission.
Wylde does go interesting places and I liked seeing the other characters again, but I felt that it would have been a stronger story if it had been longer and Dove and John's relationship took center stage. As it was, much of it was focused on the rescue and the politics around the rescue.
Still, I'm looking forward to what comes next.
