Let me preface by saying that I usually like my Doms to be male and I had my reservations going in about having the hero be the sub in the D/s relationship. Kristen Ashley thoroughly alleviated my worries and then some. In fact, if you don't like your subs topping from the bottom...
Interestingly enough, for a book named The Farthest Edge, I felt that this story might have been one of the least envelope-pushing I've read by Ashley. In a good way. Branch and Evangeline's relationship is sweet, hot, thoroughly explores their passion and love for each other, and yet never dips into alpha-hole territory. In my past experience with Ashley books, the hero would inevitably do something fairly terrible that would need groveling to make up for - this doesn't happen in this book. Take of that what you will, but I for one loved that.
Despite his alpha-ness, Branch's submission to Eva is believable and hot, thoroughly illustrating what they like to say - the sub is the one with the power because they're the ones who are gracing the Dom with their submission. And despite wearing power well and lots of kick-ass confidence, I loved the Eva was also able to be vulnerable and open to love despite everything. Her strength was truly remarkable.
I really liked The Farthest Edge and I can't wait to see the next book. Hopefully it's the one with the two Doms duking it out.
