Tempting the Darkness

Darkness Series, Book 5

Note: This book is not stand-alone and cannot really be read without reading the previous books. Much of the plot of this book hinges upon reading what happened previously.

Considering that this is the fifth book in the series, I thought that it would have been useful to have had a little more background information than was in the book. For example: I wasn't clear as to why Rajana stole Felicity, and if she was one of the "good guys" or the bad guys. It seems that she is one of the good guys because she imprisoned Avadur -- except she stole Felicity and seems to have no qualms about treating the other people poorly. If she's a bad guy, I didn't understand why she had her evil husband imprisoned.

That aside, the entire premise of this book was structured around Gabriella's sense of betrayal because Cooper went against her wishes and turned her. First off, I never really understood Gabriella's problem with becoming a vampire. She called it "rape" on multiple occasions and yet it seems that she doesn't have any concrete objections to being a vampire except that she wasn't asked. Sure and not being asked is a pretty big deal when it comes to something so life altering as becoming a vampire, but she didn't even seem to have a problem with drinking blood. With all her histrionics regarding getting turned, it was a let down when she just forgave Cooper without really working through that either and then even begged him to forgive her. I thought that was rather unbelievable.

One question: Does Gypsy ever think of anything other than sex? Or is her entire brain just saturated with sex pheromones to the exclusion of all rational thought?

Despite all that, I thought this book was rather interesting and I'm going to pick up the next book in the series to see what will happen next.

Book Blurb for Tempting the Darkness

For twenty long years, Cooper Hawthorne has kept the brightest light in his bleak existence a deeply hidden secret. All this time, his beloved Gabriella has slept safely in cryogenic stasis, awaiting the day he finds a cure for her terminal cancer.

As love blooms amidst the Darkness, and still no cure in sight, loneliness drives Cooper to drastic measures. He awakens Gabriella and breaks his last promise to her-by turning her into a vampire.

Gabriella's sense of betrayal weighs heavily on her attempts to deal with what Cooper has done to her. Pushing him away, she turns to his friends for support-and finds she isn't the only one hurt by his actions.

Cooper fights the temptation to use his powers to wipe her mind of the damning memories. But, when he comes face to face with the monster that created him, he knows what he must do.

Will Gabriella be able to save him before it's too late? Or will the Darkness swallow him whole?
