Tales from the SFR Brigade

I really enjoyed this compilation. None of them disappointed and most were downright stunning.

Imprint - Pippa Jay

A mercenary with a heart of gold and the Marshall she falls in love with.

I liked the concept, but I felt like there wasn't quite enough layering in of Jiona's thoughts and past before the big reveal of her past, which made it hard to sympathize with her. I also had a hard time believing in the romance bit because it felt a bit rushed, without a proper base to support the amount of devotion later on.

Allure - Amy Laurens

About a woman's whose betrothed is heading off to war in space, this one is very short but sweet despite that.

Nobody's Present - Marcella Burnard

The sexy physicist who unexpectedly saves the bacon of a ship of aliens. This was smart, funny and I loved how Marcella managed to cram so much history, witty banter, history and feels into this short. Brilliantly done and I loved the characters. Would love to see a sequel set in this world.

The Stranger - Kyndra Hatch

A warrior renders aid to a wounded soldier and finds her lost love.

This was very short, but it packs a hard punch. Impeccable timing, pace and worldbuilding, all within very few pages. I'd love to see more in this world, hopefully starring these two characters.

Mission: Nam Selan - Linnea Sinclair

This is a continuation of Linnea's Alliance Command series. It involves Branden Kel-Paten and Tasha and a mission they need to take.

Although it would undoubtedly be better if I had read the previous book, Linnea does a superb job of weaving in sufficient details that the story can stand alone. The characters were vibrant, the conflict real and believable and I was sitting on the edge of my seat toward the end. Definitely going back and hunting down more of Linnea's work.

Prime Sensations - Liana Brooks

The last survivors of a war attempt to reverse their fortunes.

Extremely well done. I was confused in places, but I got the impression that was because the politics and the universe this is set in was a bit too massive to stuff into a short without some loss. I loved Lana and Kaleb and I'm hoping Liana will revisit them at some point.

Envy's Revenge -- Berinn Rae

I really liked this, but then again I love the strong silent type. No blurb since I can't figure out how to do it without spoilers. Suffice to say that I loved Hunter, his quiet tenderness and I always have a soft spot for a hero that doesn't/can't speak.

Whiskey and Starshine - Erica Hayes

In short, redemption.

Well-done, but a bit too gritty for my taste. I also found it hard to buy the juxtaposition between the cowboy West with computer chips and photon pistols.
