Summer Girl, Winter Boy

Heartbreaking and funny at the same time, even if I hadn't previously fallen in love with Barbara's writing already, this would have put her on the map.

Barbara tackles some hard concepts in this story face-on, not flinching away from them, yet managing to insert just enough joy and hope. I appreciated that despite the abilities and monetary means of the characters, their troubles and remaining trauma weren't solved with an easy hand-wave.

The story may open up with somewhat of a insta-love scenario, but I can buy it as Barbara makes Jai and Summer's need to be seen as themselves and their desire to escape their past painfully clear. There were so many points in the book when I just wanted to hug the both of them and tell them, "Oh, honey...it's not your fault..."

Even if I had a brief moment of insta-love grumbling, the amount of soul searching and work that Summer and Jai put forth into keeping their happiness alive overturned any complaints I might have had. Nothing is easy for them, not Summer's family, not their own guilt, not Jai's family and certainly not the drug cartel or the man who holds Jai's leash.

This is a book that I'd revisit again and again, both for the funny and for the heartbreakingly beautiful moments when two shattered people find refuge in each other and find themselves stronger than ever because of each other.
