Before we go any further, I'll admit I really hate post-apoc stories. It's not my cuppa and I didn't realize that this was going to be post-apoc. I was originally going to score it as a 3, but I bumped it up some because I wasn't sure how much of my lack of enjoyment was simply because I hate all the post-apoc tropes.
Super long disclaimer over, I thought the story was a mixed bag. I liked the way the werewolf was sweet and protective and more human than the scientists. I thought the almost complete and utter insanity and barbaric animal behavior of the humans to be slightly unbelievable. I don't believe that a true leader wouldn't have appeared, someone who could have led the humans to be more than animals scrabbling for survival and getting their remaining jollies by earning their deserved annihilation. I found the plot to be weak and the world building weaker. The atmosphere was there, but more questions came up with the descriptions than were answered. There felt like there were a lot of contradictions by the information implied. The sex was okay. It felt a bit off for me because of the power imbalance but I felt better about it after a second read through due to things revealed later on, although that again raised more questions.
Overall, it's not terrible. It's fairly well-written and the characters are likeable and I can see this appealing to the people who like post-apoc stuff. I realize this is kind of damning with faint praise, but...just didn't do it for me.
Serena has spent her entire life in the underground, hiding with the rest of humanity from the werewolf plague above. Then she begins taking care of Connor—a werewolf the humans have captured to experiment on, in the hopes of uncovering a cure—and finds her entire belief system shaken.
Connor isn’t a vicious animal, hell-bent on the destruction of the human race. He’s kind, thoughtful, and above all—absolutely delicious. The feelings he’s starting to inspire are sending Serena out of control…lewd, filthy, glorious feelings, which could cost her job as a nurse. Not to mention her life.Lust and love between a wolf and a human are strictly forbidden. But for Connor, Serena may be willing to break all the rules…
