A sweet, but grittily realistic story of second chances.
I appreciated how it truly was a story of where two people had to grow separately in order for their love to work. Denys and Lola, as they were before, would never have succeeded as a couple (and in fact didn't). What made the story real and wonderful for me was how they really did need the time apart and their love was tempered by what they needed to learn and grow into themselves. Denys and Lola were strong characters, both knowing what they wanted and willing to go after their goals with unfaltering determination. In a story of second chances, it was also nice to see that they were mostly civil towards each other, even if they both had good reason to be upset at the other at various times. I especially appreciated that Lola didn't just sacrifice her love upon the altar of reality, but she also did it in a way where she wasn't so much martyring herself as finding an alternate, viable path to move ahead in her live. Lola's a survivor and I loved her for it.
Despite all that, in a way I was disappointed by how the story concluded. It wasn't unrealistic, per se, but I felt that the story ended rather curtly when I wanted to see them surmount the difficulties that faced them rather than leave it up to the imagination. In fact, with all of their obstacles, it felt easier to imagine them floundering than not.
Still, I enjoyed the story, although I can't say that No Mistress of Mine is going on my keeper shelf. Good if you like your stories on the chewier side, however, and Lola is certainly worth the price of admission.
