Guardian of the Dragon

WindVerse 13

I nearly rated this book a 2.5 due to squick and potential trigger factors. I ended up not doing so because she did have a choice and there was interest on her end, but it was a major issue that was never resolved.

In short, her commanding officer commands her to sleep with the person she's guarding. Then, it turns out that if the protectee of these guardians makes a request, no one can gainsay them. I'm sure I don't need to outline just how exactly that's problematic if this is the sort of thing that's sanctioned in this world.

This happens at the start of the book and kicks off the story. It was a heavy-handed plot device and the fact that her commanding officer could and did do that wasn't ever adequately explained and he never gets called on it either, which is another problem. I kept reading because it was clear Fiona wanted Drakon, but that was definitely something at the back of my brain that wouldn't go away.

Drakon's family dynamic was also odd in that "I'm not sure what's going on other than absolute evil for no good reason" sort of way. In fact, many things had the "I'm not sure why this is this way except additional villainy is tasty" sort of vibe. It was like the author just wanted to throw more bad stuff at the plot to make it better. It mostly worked, which is to the author's credit.

Other than that, Fi and Dra were mostly a cute couple. I would have liked a little more insight into their characters and more nuance given to them, but it didn't not work. Their interactions were fun and I would have liked to have seen Dra actually be grand duke and be a good one. Pity that last never really happened.

Overall, it's not a terrible book, even with the squick factor. I just can't whole-heartedly recommend it.
