Looking for a great, fast-paced novel? What happens when the "bad" side wins the apocalypse? Does the world continue? In this new series, the world continues for many millennia. The author spends time building up the history behind the apocalypse and laying out the details so the reader won't be confused at the end. The reader will meet Noon, the main character, soon in the novel. Noon has a terrible secret-she has destructive magic, possibly life-changing magic. She has the potential to control the demons and maintain a sort of peace. When she meets Ari, she realizes that her powers might not be her only worry. Ari is charismatic, handsome, and powerful-a man with the potential to control Noon.
The characters are interesting to get to know. Noon has the ability to be a strong woman, but her own hesitancy holds her back. The reader may feel like Noon never truly comes into her own. Ari is Noon's powerful counterpart, but he overshadows Noon in this novel. The other characters are nice enough, they provide a good deal of background for the reader. However, many of the characters are not particularly memorable.
This book was overall a good enough read; however, there were many instances where the plot lagged or the characters did not live up to their potential. The background information was a little too much; although it was fun learning about the apocalypse, the first huge chunk of the book focused mostly on the background information and not on the action-filled plot. Overall, this book would be recommended to an adult reader.
Armageddon is over. The demons won. And yet somehow…the world has continued. Survivors worship patron demons under a draconian system of tributes and rules. These laws keep the demons from warring among themselves, and the world from slipping back into chaos.
Noon Onyx grew up on the banks of the river Lethe, the daughter of a prominent politician, and a descendant of Lucifer’s warlords. Noon has a secret: She was born with waning magic, the dark, destructive, fiery power that is used to control demons and maintain the delicate peace among them. But a woman with waning magic is unheard of, and some would consider her an abomination.
Noon is summoned to attend St. Lucifer’s, a school of demon law. She must decide whether to declare her powers there…or to attempt to continue hiding them, knowing the price for doing so may be death. And once she meets the forbiddingly powerful Ari Carmine—who suspects Noon is harboring magic as deadly as his own—Noon realizes there may be more at stake than just her life.
